Job summary

HR POD Careers is seeking a senior backend/integration engineer to design, build, test, and operate event-driven services on AWS. You will extend data models, build connectors to external systems, and ensure reliable, observable integrations across multiple domains including government and IoT feeds.

The role also involves maintaining legacy PHP integrations, mentoring two mid-level engineers, and upholding engineering standards while applying AI tools judiciously.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience building and operating backend or integration services in production.
• Proven end-to-end ownership from design to shipping and operating systems.
• Strong hands-on experience with AWS serverless and messaging services including SQS/SNS, Lambda, S3, EventBridge, Step Functions, API Gateway, CloudWatch, Secrets Manager.
• Backend engineering with Node.js, TypeScript, Python or similar.
• Go experience is a plus and learnable.
• Knowledge of integration/messaging patterns like idempotency, deduplication, ordering, DLQ, replay, retry/backoff, fault tolerance.
• Experience with JSON, XML/XSD, CSV parsing, validation, transformation, mapping.
• REST API design/consumption and partner integration with SOAP, SFTP, batch files.
• Mentoring/leading engineers and raising engineering standards.
• Strong debugging and root-cause analysis across systems.
• Structured logging, monitoring, observability and debugging.
• Hands-on use of AI tools in engineering work; know where they help or hinder.
• Production Go experience is a plus.
• Experience with PHP for existing integrations.
• Data transformation language like XSLT or DataWeave.
• Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CDK, CloudFormation) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Streaming/storage tech beyond basics (Kinesis, DynamoDB, OpenSearch).
• Experience with government/GDPR-sensitive data domains.
• AgriTech, IoT, supply-chain or enterprise integration platforms (MuleSoft, Boomi, Camel) a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test, deploy, and operate event-driven services using AWS SQS/SNS, Lambda, EventBridge, Step Functions, S3, and API Gateway.
• Extend the canonical data model to standardise data from multiple sources into a single internal representation.
• Build connectors to ingest from and deliver to external partner systems with data validation.
• Design reliable integrations with idempotency, deduplication, ordering, DLQ, replay, retry and fault tolerance.
• Ship VetLink and subsequent integrations end to end including design, development, testing, deployment, monitoring, docs and runbooks.
• Maintain and modernise existing integrations including government/compliance APIs, IoT feeds, and third-party software (some legacy PHP).
• Review PRs, set engineering standards, unblock mid-level engineers and help their growth.
• Build systems with strong structured logging, monitoring, observability and debugging capabilities.
• Investigate production issues across multiple systems and trace failures to root causes.
• Hands-on use of AI tools in real engineering work, applying judgment on value.
