Job summary

SMEC, part of SJ Group, seeks an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer for a barrage rehabilitation project. You will assess, design and rehabilitate mechanical gate systems, hoists and related equipment to deliver safe and reliable solutions. Strong design and assessment skills in hydraulic gates are required.

The role requires deep knowledge of gate mechanisms, adherence to international standards and ability to coordinate with a multidisciplinary team across the project lifecycle.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master’s degree is an advantage.
• Minimum 15 years of relevant professional experience, including at least 5 years in design, rehabilitation, or maintenance of gates, hoists and mechanical equipment for dams or hydraulic infra.
• Experience with radial/vertical-lift gates, hoisting systems, trunnions, seals and embedded parts.
• Good knowledge of BS, ASTM and EN standards.
• Experience with World Bank or MDB-funded projects is highly desirable.
• Good communication, documentation, coordination and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

• Conduct condition assessments of barrage gates, pocket gates and associated equipment.
• Review drawings, maintenance records, operating history and inspection results.
• Assess and design radial and vertical-lift gates and hoisting systems.
• Develop rehabilitation, refurbishment and replacement options and prepare designs, drawings, specs and BOQs.
• Support technical specs, bidding, procurement, fabrication inspections, testing and commissioning.
• Provide input to safety, feasibility and other project reports with multidisciplinary team.

The role

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team for a key barrage rehabilitation project. The role will involve the assessment, design, and rehabilitation of mechanical gate systems, hoists, and associated equipment, supporting the project team in delivering safe, reliable, and practical solutions.

• Conduct condition assessments of barrage gates, pocket gates, head regulator gates, hoists, and associated mechanical equipment.
• Review existing drawings, maintenance records, operating history, and inspection results to identify mechanical condition and rehabilitation requirements.
• Assess and design radial and vertical-lift gates, hoisting systems, trunnions, seals, embedded parts, and associated mechanical components.
• Develop rehabilitation, refurbishment, and replacement options and prepare mechanical designs, drawings, specifications, and BOQs.
• Support technical specifications, bidding documents, procurement, contractor submissions, fabrication inspections, testing, and commissioning.
• Provide technical input to barrage safety, feasibility, detailed design, and other project reports, working closely with the wider multidisciplinary team.

You will bring proven experience in mechanical engineering design and rehabilitation, with strong knowledge of hydraulic gate systems and associated equipment, along with good communication and teamwork skills.

Suitable Applicants Will Have/be

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master’s degree is an advantage.
• Minimum 15 years of relevant professional experience, including at least 5 years in the design, rehabilitation, or maintenance of gates, hoists, and mechanical equipment for dams, barrages, or major hydraulic infrastructure.
• Experience with radial/vertical-lift gates, hoisting systems, trunnions, seals, embedded parts, and NDT/condition assessment.
• Good knowledge of relevant international standards, including BS, ASTM, and EN.
• Experience with World Bank or other MDB-funded infrastructure projects is highly desirable.
• Good communication, documentation, coordination, and teamwork skills.
