Job summary

Manulife is seeking an experienced underwriter to assess risk, approve cases within authority limits, and ensure premium adequacy and documentation. The role involves project support, audits, and representing the company in industry activities.

The candidate will work in a hybrid setup, collaborating with Sales, Compliance, and Medical teams, and will engage in training and process improvement initiatives within a global insurance framework.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Science/Sociology, Medical Science, Nursing or equivalent with 5–10 years underwriting experience.
  • Achieve at least 90% agreement rating from a self-audit case review.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience supervising a team.
  • Good decision-making skill and ability to handle confidential information.
  • Able to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • LOMA, AALU, FALU certification/exam is an advantage.
  • Proficient in MS Office: Word, Excel & PowerPoint.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in seminars and activities on behalf of the company.
  • Assist in projects such as ePOS, AUW and WMT.
  • Meet file documentation standards and conduct periodic underwriting audits.
  • Manage relationships with agents and sales personnel; conduct market research.
  • Communicate underwriting practices and decisions to distributors.

Job description

New Business and Underwriting assesses all the risks the applicants for insurance represent. The impact of the whole risk on mortality and morbidity should be properly assessed. These risks include medical impairments, financial, avocational, occupational, geographical, political risk, and insurable interest.

Position Responsibilities

Underwriting: Ensure cases are paid with sufficient premium and all documents are properly documented. Responsible for the integrity of the underwriting approval of all applications within underwriting authority limits. Performs a variety of routine and complex administrative areas related to Underwriting.

Company Representation: Actively participate in seminars and other activities on behalf of the company in various associations (PLIA, MIB, HOLUAP). Demonstrate working knowledge of business practices in relation to existing regulatory requirements. Show care and concern and to acknowledge the complaint promptly from customers and external distributors, medical consultant and service providers.

Project Management: Assist in ePOS, AUW and WMT and other projects.

Self-Audit & Documentations: Meets all file documentation standards, complies with underwriting and authority level standards. Conducts periodic underwriting audit for every underwriter & review of cases with each underwriter upon completion of each audit session.

Relationship Supervision & Market Research: Responsible for several agents and is the secondary point of contact for Sales personnel. Gathers/conducts industry surveys for underwriting updates.

Agent and Client Management: Communicates with distributors to help understand underwriting practices and decisions which help build solid beneficial relationships. Observes the service standards committed by the department in handling related tasks.

Required Qualifications
  • Graduate of Bachelor's Degree in either Social Science/Sociology, Medical Science, Nursing or its equivalent 5 - 10 years underwriting experience
  • Achieving at least 90% agreement rating from a self-audit case review at the end of that period
  • Strong Leadership Skills with experience in supervising a team
  • Strength of character to provide recommendations or communicate issues and has good decision‑making skills
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with the team and other departments
  • Maintain efficiency, reduce errors or reworks, observe confidentiality of information Work with team to achieve corporate goals and objectives
  • LOMA, AALU, FALU certification/exam is an advantage
  • Proficient in using MS Office: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel & Powerpoint
