Job summary

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field is required.
• Experience estimating structural steel fabrication or construction is preferred.
• Ability to read drawings, specs, and technical documents with attention to details.
• Proficiency with Excel and BIM/CAD software is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Review drawings, specs, scope of work to determine project requirements.
• Prepare detailed estimates and cost calculations for structural steel projects.
• Perform quantity take-offs for structural steel, plates, bolts, welds, coatings, and materials.
• Calculate material, labor, equipment, fabrication, transportation, and installation costs.
• Prepare bills of materials, cost breakdowns, and pricing summaries.
• Coordinate with engineering, detailing, procurement, fabrication, and project teams.
• Review BIM models and shop drawings to support quantity take-offs and estimating.
• Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations and incorporate costs.
• Identify scope gaps, assumptions, and cost risks during estimating.
• Submit estimates and supporting docs within deadlines.
• Review revisions and changes and update estimates accordingly.
• Assist in evaluating variations and change orders as needed.
• Maintain organized records of estimates and costing data.
• Support improving estimating methods and pricing accuracy.

The Structural Steel Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate project estimates, material quantities, labor requirements, and cost calculations for structural steel fabrication and construction projects. The role reviews project drawings, specifications, and scope requirements to develop competitive and commercially sound estimates.

Key Responsibilities:

• Review structural drawings, specifications, scope of work, and other project documents to determine project requirements.


• Prepare detailed estimates and cost calculations for structural steel fabrication and installation projects.


• Perform quantity take-offs for structural steel, plates, bolts, welding materials, coatings, and other required materials.


• Calculate material, labor, equipment, fabrication, transportation, and installation costs.


• Prepare bills of materials, cost breakdowns, and pricing summaries.


• Coordinate with engineering, detailing, procurement, fabrication, and project teams to validate project requirements and costing assumptions.


• Review BIM models, shop drawings, and other technical documents when required to support quantity take-offs and estimating.


• Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations for materials, services, and project requirements.


• Compare supplier and subcontractor pricing and incorporate appropriate costs into project estimates.


• Identify scope gaps, exclusions, assumptions, and potential cost risks during the estimating process.


• Prepare and submit estimates, quotations, and supporting documentation within required timelines.


• Review revisions, addenda, and changes to project documents and update estimates accordingly.


• Assist in evaluating variations, change orders, and additional works when required.


• Maintain organized records of estimates, pricing references, supplier quotations, and project costing data.


• Support the team in improving estimating methods, cost databases, and pricing accuracy.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or a related field.


• Relevant experience in estimating, quantity take-off, or cost engineering, preferably within structural steel fabrication, steel construction, or a similar industry.


• Strong ability to read and interpret structural drawings, specifications, and technical documents.


• Knowledge of structural steel materials, fabrication processes, connections, and installation methods.


• Experience with quantity take-offs and material costing.


• Proficiency in Excel and familiarity with estimating, CAD, BIM, or construction-related software.


• Experience reviewing BIM models or using software such as Tekla Structures, AutoCAD, or Revit is an advantage.


• Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.


• High attention to detail and accuracy.


• Good communication and coordination skills.


• Ability to manage multiple estimates and meet project deadlines.
