Job description

Software Development Manager - Automation and AI Tools

This role has been designed as 'Hybrid' with a requirement that you will work on average 2 days per week from an HPE office.

Who We Are:

Hewlett Packard Enterprise is the global edge-to-cloud company advancing the way people live and work. We help companies connect, protect, analyze, and act on their data and applications wherever they live, from edge to cloud, so they can turn insights into outcomes at the speed required to thrive in today’s complex world. Our culture thrives on finding new and better ways to accelerate what’s next. We know varied backgrounds are valued and succeed here. We have the flexibility to manage our work and personal needs. We make bold moves, together, and are a force for good. If you are looking to stretch and grow your career our culture will embrace you. Open up opportunities with HPE.

Job Description:

In the HPE Hybrid Cloud, we lead the innovation agenda and technology roadmap for all of HPE. This includes managing the design, development, and product portfolio of our next-generation cloud platform, Green Lake. Working with customers, we help them reimagine their information technology needs to deliver a simple, consumable solution that helps them drive their business results. Join us redefine what’s next for you.

What you’ll do:

Our engineering organization builds and operates the test automation, IO validation, and AI-enabled developer tooling that HPE's global storage engineering teams rely on every day. This includes workload validation tools used across thousands of test cycles, emerging AI agents that accelerate product development through AI-First SDLC, and high velocity test automation enabling advanced BI analysis. We're looking for a Software Development Manager to lead a talented team of roughly 10 engineers in Bangalore who build these tools, and to coordinate with a customer and stakeholder base that spans India, the US, and beyond. This is not a purely technical management role. The team's leadership, roadmap partners, and end users are split across geographies and time zones. Success in this role depends as much on relationship-building, negotiation, and influence as it does on engineering management fundamentals. If you enjoy the challenge of leading a strong local team while representing its work and priorities on a global stage, this role was built for someone like you.

Responsibilities:
  • Provides direct and ongoing leadership for a team of individual contributors designing and developing new products, enhancements and updates, and coordinating projects for systems software.
  • Manages headcount, deliverables, schedules, and costs for multiple ongoing projects, ensuring that resources are appropriately allocated and that goals, objectives, timelines, and budgets are met in accordance with program and organizational roadmaps.
  • Communicates project status and escalates issues to direct managers, program managers, and internal and external development partners.
  • Manages relationships with outsourced partners and suppliers, including setting expectations regarding deliverables, product quality, schedules, and costs; ensures that team members are effectively communicating and collaborating with outsourced resources.
  • Proactively identifies opportunities for process improvement and cost reduction opportunities.
  • Provides people-care management for assigned team members, including hiring, setting and monitoring of annual performance plans, coaching, and career development; ensures that proper knowledge and career development tools are in place to support ongoing team member and process development.
  • Serve as the primary bridge between the India-based engineering team and a globally distributed stakeholder base, building trust, ensuring priority alignment, and maintaining momentum across time zones.
  • Operate effectively in a matrixed organization, influencing peer managers, program leadership, and senior executives without direct authority to drive consensus and unblock cross-team dependencies.
  • Comfortable representing the team's work and advocating for its priorities in front of senior leadership located outside India, including navigating differing regional norms around process, escalation, and decision‑making.
What you need to bring:
Education:
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) or Master of Science (MS) degree in CS, CEE, or related engineering discipline with supporting experience.
Experience Required:
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 2 to 5+ years directly leading engineering teams (individual contributors and/or leads).
  • Demonstrated success operating in a globally distributed organization by leading or closely partnering with teams/stakeholders in a different country and time zone than your own.
  • Ideally this includes managing work and relationships between India and the US.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English; able to distill technical status and risk into clear, concise updates for both engineers and senior executives.
  • Track record of influencing peers and leadership without formal authority through negotiation, data, and relationship capital rather than escalation alone.
  • Solid technical grounding in software engineering practice (SDLC, CI/CD, agile and/or waterfall project management) to enable making sound technical trade‑off decisions.
Additional Experience Preferred:
  • Experience with test automation, hardware/storage validation, or developer productivity tooling.
  • Sufficient working knowledge of languages and frameworks such as Python, React, C++, and Go to review designs and engage credibly in technical discussions, not necessarily to write production code day‑to‑day.
  • Familiarity with modern AI engineering concepts such as agents, agent skills, MCP servers, and applied LLM tooling.
  • Prior experience managing outsourced partners, suppliers, or contingent staff alongside a core team.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Strong leadership skills, including coaching, team building, and conflict resolution.
  • Advanced project management skills including time and risk management, resource prioritization, and project structuring.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to manage team members across geographies to drive workforce development and achieve desired results.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including negotiation, presentation, and influence skills.
  • Advanced business acumen, technical knowledge, and extensive knowledge in applications and technologies.
  • Strong multi‑tasking and prioritization skills.
  • Strong communication skills (e.g. written, verbal, presentation); mastery in English and local language.
  • Good understanding of the company's policies and processes.
What We Can Offer You:
  • Health & Wellbeing We strive to provide our team members and their loved ones with a comprehensive suite of benefits that supports their physical, financial and emotional wellbeing.
  • Personal & Professional Development We also invest in your career because the better you are, the better we all are. We have specific programs catered to helping you reach any career goals you have — whether you want to become a knowledge expert in your field or apply your skills to another division.
  • Unconditional Inclusion We are unconditionally inclusive in the way we work and celebrate individual uniqueness.
  • We know varied backgrounds are valued and succeed here. We have the flexibility to manage our work and personal needs. We make bold moves, together, and are a force for good.
