Job summary

TO THE NEW is seeking a subtitling specialist to create and edit subtitles and closed captions in English variants (US/UK/AUS/CAN). You will transcribe dialogues, time-code captions, and translate Hindi dialogues into English for subtitles.

Follow client protocols, use subtitling tools, and deliver accurate files for QC and delivery on tight deadlines. Strong English, fast typing (60+ wpm), and meticulous attention to detail are essential.

Job description

• Create & edit subtitles and closed captions (English - US, UK, AUS, CAN etc)
• Transcription and Time coding of English dialogues and translation of Hindi dialogues into English to create subtitles or closed captioning files
• Complete work assignments in a timely and accurate manner
• Able to apply client-specific protocols as needed and adhere to all special instructions
• Be proactive and communicate problems/developments effectively to the Manager, peers, and/or internal staff as needed
• Encoding and exporting of text files for QC and/or delivery
• Reformat existing text files to alternate frame rates and versions
• Conduct research for correct spellings, terms, translations, and information to ensure accuracy when creating and syncing text
• Caption writing work independently to transcribe, time and place captions for the deaf and hard-of-hearing audience for a variety of media and clients including, but not limited to, network broadcast, home video/DVD and first-run feature films.

Requirements

• Experience in subtitling, closed captioning and related software tools experience preferred
• Fluency in English, both writing and comprehending
• Familiarity with subtitling and captioning tools like MacCaption, Subtitle edit, Ooona etc
• Knowledge of different subtitles/ closed captioning formats such as SCC, SRT, TTML (.dfxp, .xml, .ttml) etc
• Good understanding of SMPTE guidelines related to CC and Subtitling
• Candidates need to have native proficiency with language & have excellent critical skills in spelling, grammar, and idiomatic flow
• Ability to understand captioning technologies and trends
• Ability to use problem-solving and decision-making skills to exercise initiative
• Ability to learn and train colleagues and external team members with CC/Subtitle practices, workflows and tool updates
• Experience in tasks requiring extreme accuracy
• Ability to work flexible hours if and when necessary
• Candidates must be able to type 60+ wpm for extended periods and work under tight deadlines and have a commitment to detail, quality and productivity

Good to Have

• Thorough knowledge of using specialist dictionaries, thesauruses and reference books to find the closest equivalent for terminology and words used
• Fluency in any regional or foreign language would be a plus
