The Scrum Master is a servant-leader responsible for ensuring that the Scrum framework is applied effectively across development teams. The role facilitates collaboration, coaches team members, and removes impediments to ensure teams deliver high-quality software products aligned with business objectives.
The Scrum Master acts as a bridge between development teams, Product Owners, and stakeholders, fostering a culture of transparency, accountability, continuous improvement, and Agile excellence. This role is critical for organizations seeking predictable delivery, high-performing teams, and successful Agile adoption.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Agile Facilitation & Coaching
- Facilitate all Scrum ceremonies: Sprint Planning, Daily Stand-Ups, Sprint Reviews, Sprint Retrospectives, and Backlog Refinement sessions.
- Coach the team, Product Owner, and stakeholders on Agile principles, Scrum practices, and iterative development.
- Promote a self-organizing, high-performing team culture where accountability, collaboration, and innovation are encouraged.
- Guide Product Owners in prioritizing the backlog, defining clear acceptance criteria, and ensuring user stories are well-formed and ready for development.
- Team Support & Servant Leadership
- Identify and remove impediments or blockers that prevent the team from meeting sprint goals.
- Shield the team from external distractions or conflicting priorities that could impact delivery.
- Monitor team health, morale, and performance, intervening proactively when issues arise.
- Foster continuous learning and encourage experimentation and innovation.
3. Delivery & Process Management
- Ensure that the team follows Scrum processes and adheres to Agile best practices.
- Track progress using metrics such as velocity, burn-down charts, cumulative flow diagrams, and sprint goal completion.
- Support the team in achieving predictable and sustainable delivery of value.
- Identify process inefficiencies and implement improvements to increase team productivity and quality.
- Assist in planning release schedules and coordinating with stakeholders for timely delivery.
4. Stakeholder Communication & Reporting
- Serve as a liaison between the team and external stakeholders, ensuring transparent communication regarding progress, risks, and impediments.
- Provide regular updates to leadership on team performance, delivery timelines, and quality metrics.
- Facilitate alignment between business priorities and team capacity.
- Ensure stakeholders understand Agile processes and expectations to reduce misalignment or scope creep.
5. Continuous Improvement & Scaling Agile
- Lead retrospectives and implement lessons learned to improve team performance and process efficiency.
- Promote continuous improvement, self-reflection, and proactive problem-solving within the team.
- Support organisational Agile transformation initiatives and coaching other Scrum Masters or teams.
- Implement Agile scaling frameworks such as SAFe, LeSS, or Spotify Model where applicable.
- Drive metrics-based insights to optimize delivery, quality, and team performance.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business, or related field.
- Advanced Agile certifications preferred: CSM, PSM I/II, SAFe Scrum Master, PMI-ACP.
Experience
- 2–7 years of experience in Scrum Master, Agile Coach, or Agile Delivery roles.
- Proven experience facilitating Scrum ceremonies and coaching teams in Agile practices.
- Exposure to software development environments and cross-functional project delivery.
- Experience in scaled Agile frameworks is advantageous.
Technical & Functional Skills
Required
- Deep understanding of Scrum, Agile principles, and iterative delivery.
- Ability to facilitate and coach teams to follow Agile processes effectively.
- Proficiency with Agile project management tools: Jira, Trello, Azure DevOps, Rally.
- Experience in backlog management, sprint planning, and release planning.
- Knowledge of SDLC, QA processes, and software development workflows.
- Ability to interpret metrics and provide actionable insights to improve team performance.
Preferred / Advantageous
- Experience with scaled Agile frameworks (SAFe, LeSS, Nexus, Spotify Model).
- Familiarity with DevOps and CI/CD practices.
- Strong knowledge of metrics and dashboards for Agile performance tracking.
- Understanding of organizational change management in Agile adoption.
- Experience in coaching multiple teams or mentoring junior Scrum Masters.
