About the role

The Science Laboratory Assistant is primarily responsible for the preparation of requirements and the provision of assistance to faculty members and students in relation to the conduct of science laboratory classes. He/she is tasked with the maintenance and upkeep of the laboratory facilities and the equipment and supplies needed for laboratory operations and activities.

Key responsibilities

• Assists in preparing the laboratory development plan and the required budget;
• Assists the science academic staff by:
• Making available through either development or purchase the required instructional materials, laboratory apparatus, and visual aids.

• Undertaking the physical setup and classroom structuring for laboratory classes.
• Preparing chemicals and specimens, mixing solutions according to specifications provided by academic staff.
• Assisting in the conduct of laboratory exercises and experiments; assisting the teacher in developing practical examinations on science subjects.
• Ensuring safe usage of equipment and laboratory supplies and the physical safety of laboratory users during the conduct of experiments and laboratory exercises.
• Assists in the preliminary testing of laboratory experiments to ensure accuracy and safety.
• Issues out and checks apparatus/equipment; retrieves the same after use.
• Provides information on and implements rules and regulations on the proper use of the laboratory.
• Assists academic staff and students in the conduct of laboratory-based research.
• Facilitates the collection of specimens and maintenance of botanical and zoological specimens needed for science classes.
• Provides first aid treatment to students in cases of minor cuts, burns, etc. experienced in the course of laboratory work; assists in transporting students to the clinic in cases of more serious accidents.
• Ensures the cleanliness and orderliness of the laboratory area.
• Consolidates work outputs, results, and accomplishments into monthly and annual performance reports and submits these as well as all other required reports to the superiors in the organization.
• Attends internal and external institutional activities such as spiritual formation, retreats and recollections, committee meetings, general assemblies, conventions, convocations, programs and special activities.
• Attends training programs and learning sessions for the enhancement of professional, technical, and personal proficiencies.
• Performs such other assigned functions that are analogous, germane or related to and/or implied from the preceding enumeration of duties and responsibilities.
