The quantity surveyor/estimator is responsible for managing all costs related to construction projects—from initial calculations to final figures. The role ensures cost efficiency without compromising quality and safety standards. The QS/Estimator prepares cost estimates, bills of quantities, and project budgets, while providing technical advice and cost control throughout the project lifecycle.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates, budget forecasts, and bills of quantities (BOQ) for projects.
- Analyze project drawings, plans, and specifications to determine material, labor, and equipment requirements.
- Conduct site visits and collaborate with engineers, architects, and project managers for accurate cost assessments.
- Evaluate and negotiate with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure cost efficiency.
- Monitor project expenditures and prepare progress reports against approved budgets.
- Prepare tender documents, contracts, and cost summaries for bidding and project implementation.
- Assess variations, change orders, and claims, and recommend appropriate cost adjustments.
- Ensure compliance with local construction standards, safety regulations, and company policies.
- Provide cost advice and value engineering solutions to support project decision-making.
- Maintain proper documentation of estimates, contracts, and project cost records.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or related field.
- Licensed Civil Engineer (preferred but not always required).
- At least 2–5 years of relevant work experience in construction cost estimation or quantity surveying.
- Proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD, and cost-estimating software (e.g., Planswift, Bluebeam, Candy, or similar).
- Strong analytical and numerical skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and reporting skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a project team.
