Job summary

SMEC (an SJ Group company) is seeking a seasoned QA/QC Inspector for maritime civil and port expansion projects. You will oversee site inspections, verify materials, and drive ITP execution with attention to NDT and welding standards.

The role involves coating inspection, documentation, NCRs, and audits in challenging offshore and coastal environments, requiring a Civil/Mechanical/Marine engineering background and relevant certifications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Marine Engineering or related technical discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years in QA/QC inspection with at least 3 years on port expansion or coastal maritime projects.
  • Strong knowledge of international maritime and engineering codes (BS 6349, AWS D1.1, ASTM/ACI).
  • Certified in welding inspection (AWS-CWI/CSWIP 3.1) and/or marine coatings inspection (AMPP/NACE Level 2 or BGAS-CSWIP) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Site inspections of maritime civil and structural works including pile testing and quay wall works.
  • Verify incoming marine-grade materials and ensure MTC compliance.
  • Implement and monitor project-specific ITP, witnessing and hold points.
  • Supervise NDT and welding operations per AWS D1.1 or equivalent.
  • Inspect protective marine coatings and measure dry film thickness (DFT).
  • Generate daily inspection logs, witness reports, and QC records; issue NCRs as needed.
  • Assist in internal and external quality audits and ensure equipment calibration and traceability.

Job description

  • Site Inspection & Testing: Conduct regular visual and physical inspections of maritime civil and structural works, including dynamic/static pile testing, concrete pouring for quay walls, block placements for breakwaters, and geometric surveys of dredging profiles.
  • Material Verification: Verify that all incoming marine-grade materials (e.g., anti-corrosive structural steel, sulfate-resistant cement, cathodic protection anodes) comply with project specifications and hold valid mill test certificates (MTC).
  • ITP Execution: Implement and monitor the project-specific Inspection and Test Plan (ITP). Ensure all witness, hold, and review points are strictly adhered to before proceeding to subsequent construction stages.
  • Welding & NDT Oversight: Supervise non-destructive testing (NDT) and structural welding operations for maritime structures, ensuring compliance with AWS D1.1 or equivalent codes.
  • Coatings & Corrosion Control: Inspect surface preparation and application of protective marine coatings, measuring dry film thickness (DFT) and verifying environmental conditions adhere to NACE/CBR parameters.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Generate precise daily inspection logs, witness reports, and Quality Control records. Issue Non-Conformance Reports (NCR) upon detecting defects or deviations, tracking them through to verified closure.
  • Audits & Calibration: Assist in internal and external quality audits. Verify that all field testing and measuring equipment are fully calibrated, traceable, and properly maintained.

Job Qualifications & Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in QA/QC inspection, with at least 3 years dedicated explicitly to port expansion, terminal construction, or coastal maritime infrastructure projects.
  • Technical Codes: Strong working knowledge of international maritime and engineering codes, including BS 6349 (Maritime Works), AWS D1.1 (Structural Welding), ASTM, and ACI standards.
  • Certifications: Active certification in welding inspection (AWS-CWI or CSWIP 3.1) and/or marine coatings inspection (AMPP/NACE Level 2 or BGAS-CSWIP) is highly preferred.
  • Environment: Ability to work comfortably in challenging offshore, coastal, and waterfront environments, including working over water, on marine vessels, or in high-humidity settings.
