Job summary

The Gund Company is hiring for a production operator to implement fulfillment processes on thermoset composite manufacturing lines. You will operate presses, pultrusion, forming and shaping machines, set up tooling, and ensure products meet quality and efficiency standards.

The role includes manual tasks and the use of hand tools in a fast-paced shop environment. You will be responsible for batching materials, adjusting machine settings, performing in‑process inspections, and recording

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; hands-on training preferred.
  • Experience in manufacturing with mixing, batching or compounding equipment is preferred.

Job description

Job Summary

Implement the Production Fulfillment Process steps related to the manufacture of thermoset composite materials by operating manufacturing equipment that includes presses, forming, extrusion, pultrusion and/or shape machines. Ensures machinery is set up, works properly, and conforms with (and can produce materials that conform with) company quality, quantity, and efficiency standards. Sets up and operates one or more composites production lines under limited supervision to manufacture products of moderate complexity.

Duties also involve manual work and duties that require the use of various hand tools and secondary/accessory equipment.

Essential Job Functions
  • Form molded sheets and shapes of materials using various manufacturing equipment.
  • Adjust machine components to regulate speeds, pressures, temperatures, and amounts, dimensions, and flow of materials or ingredients.
  • Monitor machine operations and observe lights and gauges to detect malfunctions.
  • Review work orders, specifications, or instructions to determine materials, ingredients, procedures, components, settings, and adjustments for pultrusion and molding presses.
  • Measure raw material and die dimensions to verify sizes specified on work tickets.
  • Use scale, weighing, and mixing procedures to add resin & filler to prep resin for molding, pressing or shaping process.
  • Notify team leadership when raw materials fail to meet standards.
  • Install, align, and adjust die alignment, holding bars and spacers.
  • Set up tooling, load programs and set machine parameters to ensure optimal equipment performance, including stop block shimming, shear bar changes and machine parameter entry.
  • Activate machines to shape or form sheets and/or shape insulation products by pressing control buttons.
  • Manufacture molded glass polyester sheets by laying up material to the desired thickness and spreading resin according to customer orders per instructions on customer work orders.
  • Remove molds, mold components, and hold down bars from machinery during or after production is complete.
  • Remove materials or products from molds or from forming or pressing machines and stack or store them for additional processing.
  • Trim/file and de‑flash molded sheet edges and perform measuring and material inspections.
  • Perform in‑process inspection according to standard procedures.
  • Record and maintain production data, such as tolerance readings, and quantities, types, and defects of materials produced.
  • Clean dies and molds, using scrapers, brushes, scotch pads or air hoses.
  • Move materials, supplies, components, and finished products between storage and work areas using work aids such as carts, forklifts and hand trucks.
  • Maintain count and perform packaging duties as required.
  • Participate in cross training to become knowledgeable of equipment/process within the department.
  • Perform routine daily machine maintenance including cleaning up and lubrication.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Provide guidance, feedback and positive behavior modeling for The Gund Company culture of care.
  • Determine if tools are undamaged and in safe condition for use.
  • Make suggestions to improve production and order processing efficiency.
  • Follow safety rules and quality standards.

Qualifications and Competencies
  • Production and Processing: Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools including designs, uses, repair & maintenance.
  • Computers & Electronics: Knowledge of machine controls, electronic equipment including hardware/software and applications.
  • Active Listening: Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Critical Thinking: Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Quality Control Analysis: Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Troubleshooting: Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
Education and Experience
  • A high school diploma or GED with prior hands‑on, vocational or job‑related coursework/training, or any similar combination of education and experience is required.
  • Prior experience in a manufacturing industry with mixing, batching or compounding equipment is preferred.
Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee may be required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stand; walk and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lb., drums, mixing bags and/or other related material. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.

The work environment is typical of most shop environments; not climate controlled and subject to outdoor weather conditions. Team members are exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting.

  • Frequent exposure to fumes/dust particles; may require use of respirators or other types of PPE.
  • May come in contact with toxic or caustic chemicals.
