Role Overview

We are looking for a BESS Design & Technology Engineer with strong experience in electrical design, Battery Energy Storage Systems and renewable energy integration.

The candidate will be responsible for BESS system design, technology and OEM evaluation, electrical BoP assessment, renewable integration and technical support during project execution.

The role requires a good working understanding of the complete BESS ecosystem:

The candidate should be technology-agnostic and capable of evaluating new battery technologies, PCS, EMS/PPC and other BESS equipment based on technical suitability, performance, safety, reliability and project requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and assess Battery Energy Storage technologies and OEM/system-integrator solutions for utility-scale applications.
  • Evaluate Battery Container, BMS, battery chemistry, thermal management, fire protection, degradation, augmentation strategy, warranty and lifecycle performance.
  • Technically evaluate and compare PCS, EMS/PPC and other BESS technologies from different OEMs.
  • Review technical proposals, datasheets, compliance matrices, performance guarantees, warranties and technical deviations.
  • Assess new and emerging technologies and recommend suitable solutions based on project requirements.
2. BESS Electrical Design & Engineering
  • Prepare and review SLDs, equipment sizing, cable sizing, transformer sizing, HT/MV panel selection, protection philosophy and electrical layouts.
  • Review BESS configuration and sizing including MW/MWh, C-rate, SOC/DoD, efficiency, auxiliary consumption, degradation and augmentation requirements.
  • Prepare BOQ/BOM, equipment specifications and other engineering documents.
  • Review electrical studies including load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, harmonics and earthing, as applicable.
  • Review interfaces between Battery Container, PCS, Transformer, HT/MV system and Grid.
3. PCS & EMS/PPC – Equipment Evaluation & Integration

The candidate should have a good working and evaluation-level understanding of PCS and EMS/PPC equipment and should be able to technically assess different OEM solutions.

PCS – Power Conversion System

  • Evaluate PCS technology, topology, DC input voltage range, AC output voltage, MW rating, overload capability and operating temperature range.
  • Assess charging/discharging capability, efficiency curves, power factor, four-quadrant operation and active/reactive power capability.
  • Review grid-support functions including LVRT/HVRT, frequency response, voltage/reactive power control, ramp-rate control, active power control and grid synchronization.
  • Evaluate grid-following/grid-forming capability, where applicable, based on project requirements.
  • Review PCS protection functions, DC/AC isolation, short-circuit capability, cooling system, auxiliary consumption and redundancy philosophy.
  • Assess PCS performance under different SOC, load, temperature and grid operating conditions.
  • Review PCS communication interfaces and protocols with BMS, EMS/PPC, SCADA and protection systems.
  • Evaluate PCS technical datasheets, type-test reports, certifications, efficiency/performance guarantees and OEM technical deviations.
  • Compare different PCS OEMs based on technical performance, reliability, efficiency, maintainability, grid compliance and project suitability.
  • Review integration of PCS with Battery Container, MV Transformer, HT/MV Switchgear and Grid.
EMS / PPC – Energy Management & Plant Control
  • Evaluate EMS/PPC architecture, hardware and software configuration, including redundancy and availability philosophy.
  • Evaluate EMS functionality for SOC/SOH management, charge/discharge scheduling, energy dispatch, power limitation and operating-mode management.
  • Review active power, reactive power, voltage, frequency, power factor and ramp-rate control strategies.
  • Assess EMS/PPC coordination with Solar PV, Wind and BESS, including renewable smoothing, curtailment management, energy shifting and grid-support functions.
  • Review control response time, command hierarchy, set-point management, alarms, interlocks, trips and fail-safe operating philosophy.
  • Evaluate EMS/PPC communication protocols such as IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, Modbus TCP/IP and other project-specific protocols, as applicable.
  • Review SCADA/HMI, data logging, event recording, remote monitoring and remote-control functionality.
  • Assess EMS/PPC cybersecurity and basic OT/SCADA architecture requirements.
  • Evaluate EMS/PPC OEM solutions based on functionality, interoperability, reliability, cybersecurity, grid compliance and project requirements.
  • Review and validate the complete BMS–PCS–EMS/PPC control philosophy, including operating modes, charge/discharge commands, SOC limits, emergency shutdown and grid-loss scenarios.

The candidate should be capable of independently reviewing PCS and EMS/PPC technical proposals, datasheets, control philosophies, communication architecture, compliance documents and performance guarantees, and should be able to identify technical gaps, risks and integration issues before equipment selection.

  • Design and review BESS integration with Solar PV, Wind, Hybrid, FDRE and RTC projects.
  • Evaluate AC/DC coupled configurations and BESS integration at plant/grid interface.
  • Support charging/discharging strategies, renewable smoothing, ramp-rate control, energy shifting and grid-support requirements.
