Job summary

Google Inc. in Singapore seeks a Staff Software Engineer (Technical Lead) for Consumer Payments to drive technical strategy across markets and evolve payment capabilities. You will lead high-impact initiatives, architect scalable systems, and mentor engineers while partnering with PMs, UX, and global teams.

You will contribute code, lead architecture decisions, and advocate AI-assisted development to accelerate velocity, with broad influence beyond a single delivery team.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8 years of experience programming in Java, Go, C++, Python, or equivalent codebases.
• 8 years of experience designing, building, and operating scalable backend distributed systems, microservices architectures, or high-throughput APIs.
• 6 years of experience leading the end-to-end strategy, execution, and launch of multi-quarter software engineering projects.
• 6 years of experience with software architecture, driving technical consensus among globally distributed stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Define and drive the technical strategy across multiple areas within consumer payments, prioritizing efforts across different market-specific growth initiatives.
• Write scalable, maintainable code and design architecture for critical, high-ambiguity system components. Use data and technical judgment to simplify domain complexity and guide targeted investments that eliminate technical debt.
• Partner with Directors, PMs, UX, and TPMs across Singapore and global engineering centers to drive consensus and align technical strategies across markets.
• Advocate for AI-accelerated development workflows by defining team-wide policies for the verification, security, and maintenance of AI-generated code.
• Provide technical guidance and oversight to multiple concurrent workstreams, acting as an "Uber TL" rather than being tied to a single delivery team. Mentor and coach senior engineers across multiple areas, set high-bar engineering standards, and conduct rigorous design/code reviews.
