Job description

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Understands more than one method of drilling, surface and underground.
  • Must have the skills to operate the rig efficiently. Keep the hole open and stable long enough to be drilled to the target depth and be completed.
  • Apply the most suitable drilling method and use circulating fluid to ensure the recovery of the CORE and condition the hole at all times so it will remain open until completed.
  • Monitor the panel instruments, such as pressure gauges and feed or weight indicators, to track what is happening down the hole.
  • Operate the drill rig, monitor speed, and feed to attain the optimum drilling rate in various ground conditions.
  • Advise the crew on what the job involves. Know what the purpose of drilling is.
  • Train drill helpers in their duties and responsibilities, particularly in the proper use, servicing, and handling of down-hole accessories.
  • Assist in the provision of training for other employees.
  • To make sure all “Back Ends” are greased regularly after every run.
  • Keep all sub’s casing clamps and chuck jaws clean and store them in a safe place.
  • To ensure that all pipe wrenches and tube wrenches are always in good working condition.
  • To ensure HQ and NQ rod strings are ready before the hole’s diameter is reduced.
  • Always have all defective down-the-hole tools tagged and returned to the workshop for repair or replacement.
  • Observe the volume, color, and consistency of the circulating drilling fluid returns from the hole.
  • Feel, listen, and determine the sounds of vibration coming from the rods to detect if rough drilling is being experienced.
  • Perform basic repairs and maintenance on rigs and ancillary equipment.
  • Diagnose downhole problems and take remedial action.
  • Make sure that all crew members are wearing personal protective equipment.
  • Conduct a daily shift Safety, Health, and Environment toolbox meeting with the crew before commencing work. Topics of the meeting must be logged in the toolbox meeting form.
  • Conduct a daily pre-start checkup on the drilling rig and its auxiliary equipment before starting a shift using the prescribed pre-start check form.
  • Maintain good housekeeping. Ensure that all fire extinguishers are in good working condition and all safety signage is in order and clean.
  • Operate directional drilling and downhole survey equipment.
  • Exercise good communication skills with superiors and subordinates.
  • Maintain safety and environmental standards.
  • Provide regular and concise reports on all daily activities, both written and oral, including two-way radio communication if required.
  • Load securely, drive, and unload all-wheel-drive heavy vehicles.
  • Utilize own initiative and motivate others in the absence of directives from the supervisor or the Lead Hand Driller.
  • Recognize own limited capabilities and will seek advice from the Supervisor or Senior Driller.
