Octopus Energy is hiring a Backend Engineer to join a cross‑functional team delivering high‑impact MVPs for our website and mobile app. You will identify real business needs, propose practical solutions, and ship features quickly in a fast‑paced environment.

Qualifications

• Fluent spoken English is essential in an international team.
• Strong backend experience with Python and Django in production systems.
• Solid understanding of domain modelling and software architecture.
• Experience designing and integrating GraphQL and REST APIs.
• Proven ability to write robust, fault-tolerant, scalable software.
• Experience with Celery and asynchronous task processing.
• Relational database proficiency with PostgreSQL.

Responsibilities

What you’ll do

The Octopus Energy Engineering team is responsible for the sites, services, and tariffs used by millions of customers worldwide. From building cutting‑edge time‑of‑use tariffs to gamifying user experiences, we tackle a wide variety of exciting challenges to push the energy revolution forward.

Our teams are multi‑disciplined and collaborate internationally, meaning you’ll have the support and resources to collaborate with top‑tier talent and deliver high‑impact global solutions.

As a Backend Engineer in this team, you will:

• Collaborate internationally: Work closely with Octopus Energy ES and various global teams to develop and integrate new features for our website and mobile app.
• Own key product modules: Contribute directly to the private area, bill management, saving sessions, customer onboarding optimization, and marketing dashboards.
• Drive fast‑paced impact: Deliver code that directly impacts customers. Our priorities adapt to real‑world needs, meaning the pace is fast and the feedback cycle is satisfyingly quick.

What you’ll need to thrive

Fluent spoken English is absolutely essential. The team is international, so English will be the language you use on a daily basis.

On the technical side, you should have:

• Strong professional experience building backend applications with Python.
• Solid experience with Django (or equivalent robust web frameworks).
• Deep understanding of Domain Modelling and software architecture.
• Strong expertise designing and integrating GraphQL & REST APIs.
• Proven experience writing robust, fault-tolerant, and scalable software.
• Experience with Celery and asynchronous task processing.
• Solid handling of relational databases, especially PostgreSQL.
• Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to lead complex issues from concept to production.

Nice to have:

• Experience with cloud platforms and infrastructure (AWS, Terraform, Packer or Consul).
• Familiarity or exposure to frontend technologies such as React and Next.js.
• Familiarity with logging and metric aggregation platforms (DataDog).
