Job summary

Aroya Cruises seeks a Safety Officer to oversee bridge watchkeeping duties, safety compliance, and life-saving equipment readiness. The role reports to the Staff Captain daily and to the Master on safety matters, with emphasis on polar waters operations.

Responsibilities include conducting safety inductions and drills, leading investigations and audits, and coordinating with deck, engine, hotel, and expedition departments to ensure regulatory compliance and continuous safety improvement.

Qualifications

• COP Basic Polar Waters certification mandatory.
• Experience sailing in Ice and Polar Waters required.

Job description

• The Safety Officer must remain current on Bridge Watch Keeping duties and equipment and they should normally complete one sea watch per week as a minimum.
• Serve as the vessel’s Statutory Safety Officer, reporting to the Staff Captain on a day-to-day basis and directly to the Master on all safety-related matters.
• Monitor and promote compliance with maritime safety regulations, company policies, and expedition safety standards.

• Ensure the operational readiness, inspection, maintenance, and certification of all Life Saving Appliances (LSA), Fire Fighting Appliances (FFA), watertight integrity systems, and other safety-critical equipment.
• Plan, coordinate, and conduct crew safety inductions, mandatory training, emergency drills, musters, and exercises in accordance with statutory and company requirements.
• Lead safety inspections, audits, accident investigations, root cause analyses, and follow-up corrective actions to ensure continuous improvement and compliance.
• Authorize work permits and verify that appropriate safety precautions are in place before hazardous work is undertaken.
• Maintain and administer muster lists, emergency response documentation, safety certifications, records, and related safety management systems.
• Coordinate training of emergency response teams, lifeboat and life raft crews, tender operators, and deck personnel on safety-critical equipment and operations.
• Promote a strong safety culture by raising health and safety awareness, communicating company safety objectives, and encouraging crew participation in safety initiatives.
• Work closely with deck, engine, hotel, and expedition departments to support inspections, audits, surveys, certification activities, and regulatory compliance.
• Support crew development as Cadet Training Officer and act as understudy to the Staff Captain.
• Maintain proficiency in bridge watchkeeping duties and provide operational support as required by the Master and Staff Captain.
• Assist with additional duties as requested by the ships management.
