Dynamo is seeking a Java Application Server Migration Specialist to drive assessment, planning, and execution of server migrations from Oracle WebLogic to non-Oracle platforms. You will work with stakeholders to evaluate environments, develop migration strategies, and validate post-migration performance across multiple applications.

Ideal candidates have hands-on migration experience, strong Java development skills, and familiarity with automated tools like MTA/Konveyor.

Job Description:

The Java Application Server Migration Specialist will support assessment, planning, and execution of application server and Java runtime modernization initiatives across the customer's portfolio of Java applications currently running on Oracle WebLogic. This individual will work with technical stakeholders to evaluate existing application server environments, develop migration strategies, execute application server and runtime migrations, and support testing and post-migration validation across multiple applications. The ideal candidate has demonstrated experience successfully migrating Java EE/Jakarta EE applications from Oracle WebLogic to a non-Oracle application server, combining hands‑on use of automated migration/assessment tooling with the ability to manually remediate application code and configuration that tooling cannot fully automate.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Assess Oracle WebLogic-hosted applications to identify migration requirements, level of effort, risks, and dependencies.
• Develop and execute migration approach for moving Java applications from Oracle WebLogic to approved non-Oracle platforms such as Red Hat JBoss EAP, Apache Tomcat, or other approved Java runtimes.
• Use migration assessment tools such as Red Hat Migration Toolkit for Applications (MTA/Konveyor) or comparable tools to identify incompatible APIs, proprietary dependencies, configuration changes, and required application remediation.
• Evaluate target application server capabilities against each application's technical requirements (e.g., full Java EE container services available in JBoss EAP versus the lighter, servlet‑only profile of Apache Tomcat) and recommend or execute application refactoring needed to close any gaps.
• Execute application server migration activities, including deployment descriptor conversion, configuration remediation, and cutover support.
• Migrate application runtime dependencies from Oracle JDK to an approved OpenJDK distribution.
• Identify, remediate, and remove legacy Oracle‑specific application dependencies where present (e.g., Oracle Reports), in coordination with business stakeholders.
• Rebuild and validate build and deployment pipelines (e.g., Maven, Gradle, or Ant; EAR/WAR packaging) for the target application server, adapting to each application's existing toolchain.
• Collaborate with database migration teams to coordinate JDBC connectivity changes and application‑side SQL/script remediation tied to backend database migrations (e.g., Oracle‑to‑PostgreSQL).
• Configure and validate DEV/TEST/PROD environments for the new application server and runtime stack.
• Support functional, integration, regression, and performance testing to validate application behavior post‑migration.
• Document migration procedures, configuration changes, and operational runbooks.
• Participate in technical discussions with customer and project stakeholders regarding migration approach and risk.
• Troubleshoot and resolve application server, runtime, and integration issues throughout the migration lifecycle.

Required Skills/Abilities

• Strong experience with Oracle WebLogic Application Server administration and/or development.
• Demonstrated hands‑on experience executing the migration of at least one enterprise Java application from Oracle WebLogic to a non‑Oracle application server or runtime, such as Red Hat JBoss EAP, Apache Tomcat, or a comparable platform.
• Hands‑on experience with an automated migration/assessment tool for WebLogic application migrations, such as Red Hat's Migration Toolkit for Applications (MTA, formerly JBoss Windup / Konveyor) — which supports assessment across multiple target platforms including JBoss EAP and Apache Tomcat — or a comparable rule‑based migration analysis tool, since fully manual line‑by‑line remediation is not the preferred approach.
• Experience refactoring or re‑architecting applications that rely on full Java EE container services (e.g., EJB, JMS, container‑managed transactions) when the migration target is a servlet‑only container such as Apache Tomcat, rather than a full Java EE application server.
• Experience migrating Java applications from Oracle JDK to an approved OpenJDK distribution.
• Strong Java development experience, including common build tools (e.g., Maven, Gradle, or Ant), EAR/WAR packaging, and enterprise application module structures (e.g., EJB, servlets/JSP, web services) as encountered across different applications.
• Experience with application server configuration, deployment, and environment management across DEV/TEST/PROD.
• Ability to quickly assess and adapt to varying application architectures and toolchains across a portfolio of applications, rather than a single fixed technology stack.
• Experience identifying and remediating legacy or deprecated application components where present (e.g., Oracle Reports, outdated third‑party libraries).
• Ability to analyze complex enterprise Java applications and develop migration recommendations and roadmaps.
• Experience troubleshooting application server, runtime, and integration issues.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within cross‑functional teams, including coordination with database migration engineers.

Nice to Have Skills

• Experience with Konveyor/MTA rulesets specific to WebLogic-to-JBoss EAP or WebLogic-to-Tomcat migrations.
• Experience with Apache TomEE or similar Java EE‑on‑Tomcat extensions, for cases where a Tomcat target still requires partial Java EE feature support.
• Experience with Jakarta EE namespace migration tooling (e.g., Eclipse Transformer) for javax‑to‑jakarta package migrations on newer JBoss EAP or Tomcat 10+ targets.
• Experience coordinating application‑side remediation in parallel with backend database migrations (Oracle‑to‑PostgreSQL or similar).
• Experience with legacy reporting tool decommissioning (e.g., Oracle Reports, Crystal Reports).
• Familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD, and Infrastructure as Code practices for Java application deployment.
• Cloud migration and modernization experience (AWS preferred).
• Experience supporting federal, public sector, or highly regulated environments.
• Previous experience serving as a technical lead or migration architect.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
• Minimum of 5+ years of relevant Java/application server experience (9+ years of relevant experience without a Bachelor's degree).
• Demonstrated experience supporting at least one Oracle WebLogic‑to‑non‑Oracle application server migration project (e.g., JBoss EAP, Tomcat, or similar).
• Experience working in enterprise‑scale IT environments preferred.

The salary range for this position represents Dynamo's good‑faith estimate of the compensation expected to be offered at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be determined based on several factors, including, but not limited to, the responsibilities of the role, the candidate's experience, skills, education, work location, and internal equity.
