Job summary

NMIT in Marlborough is seeking a Youth Worker - Kaihāpai Rangatahi to provide care, guidance and support to ākonga under 25, helping them thrive in studies and personal development. You will work with academic staff and support services to foster wellbeing, independence and success in a positive, inclusive learning environment.

Key duties include building authentic relationships with youth and whānau, delivering holistic wellbeing support, leading inclusive programmes, using de-escalation

Qualifications

  • Relevant tertiary degree qualification with 5+ years’ experience in relevant specialist/technical field.
  • Experience mentoring and role modelling for ākonga to support personal and academic growth.
  • Commitment to cultural inclusivity and advancing Māori achievement.
  • Proficiency in managing risk and safeguarding vulnerable young people.
  • Ability to promote wellbeing and provide proactive student support with clear boundaries.

Responsibilities

  • Build authentic relationships with youth learners and whānau, supporting connections and success in tertiary education.
  • Collaborate with staff and external agencies to provide holistic wellbeing support.
  • Lead inclusive youth programmes and activities, partnering with community agencies as needed.

As our Youth Worker - Kaihāpai Rangatahi based in Marlborough, you will provide care, guidance and support to ākonga under 25 helping them thrive in their studies and personal development. Working alongside academic staff and support services you will play a key role in fostering wellbeing, independence and success while contributing to a positive, inclusive and supportive learning environment.

The key responsibilities for the role are:

  • Build authentic relationships with youth learners and their whānau by supporting strong connections and encouraging them to succeed tertiary education.
  • Collaborate with staff and external agencies to provide holistic wellbeing support to learners and their whānau, including individual, group and whānau-based support.
  • Lead inclusive youth programmes and activities that promote overall wellbeing, encourage engagement and participation. Partner with community agencies where required.
  • Use conflict resolution, de-escalation approaches where appropriate while maintaining professional boundaries and resilience.
  • Provide a safe non-judgemental space that offers strengths-based support for youth learners.

To be successful in this role you have one of the following combinations:

  • Relevant tertiary degree qualification with 5+ years’ experience in relevant specialist/technical field

In addition you will have:

  • Experience mentoring and role modelling for ākonga, providing personalised support to help them navigate challenges and achieve personal and academic growth.
  • Demonstrated commitment to cultural inclusivity, equity for Māori and advancing Māori achievement.
  • Proficiency in managing risk and following best practices to safeguard vulnerable young people.
  • Commitment to promoting the safety and wellbeing of ākonga through proactive support, clear professional boundaries and effective management of student interactions and concerns.
