Job summary

OceanaGold is offering a Waihi Summer Internship for Civil or Geotechnical Engineering students. The paid program runs mid-November to mid-February at Waihi, NZ, with a 9-day fortnight, 6:30am–4:00pm, totaling 40.5 hours weekly.

You will work in the Processing (Tailings Storage Facility) team on-site, gaining practical experience and mentorship. Based at Waihi, you will develop dashboards, assist with dam safety inspections and QA, and present outcomes to Site Management.

Qualifications

  • Currently studying towards a Bachelor of Engineering majoring in Civil or Geotechnical engineering.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills for collaborative projects.
  • Willingness to learn and apply engineering principles in a mining environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Tailings Storage Facility dashboards and a knowledge base on SharePoint for TSF documentation.
  • Assist with dam safety inspections, QA inspections and field testing.
  • Support the Tailings Facility Engineer (RTFE) in daily operations and reporting.
  • Present internship learnings to Site Management at the end of the program.

Job Description

Are you a talented and ambitious student studying towards a Bachelor of Engineering majoring in Civil or Geotechnical engineering and looking to gain practical experience in your field of study? We have the perfect opportunity for you to join our Processing (Tailings Storage Facility) team at OceanaGold working at our Waihi operation.

This paid internship opportunity will run approximately from mid-November through to mid-February (dependent on exam timetable of the successful applicant) working with our talented Processing (Tailings Storage Facility) team on-site at Waihi. The hours of work are 6:30am to 4:00pm, working a 9-day fortnight roster (5 days on, 2 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off) 40.5hrs per week. Take a long weekend every second week to explore the stunning Coromandel!

What will you be doing?

  • Gaining practical experience in your chosen field of study by working on diverse projects assigned by department managers and team members.
  • Participating in various group activities and projects with other Interns, providing you with a well-rounded knowledge of the mining process.
  • Presenting your experiences and key learnings to the Site Management Team at the conclusion of the internship, showcasing your growth and achievements.

Specific project work will involve:

Development of key Tailings Storage Facility monitoring dashboards and integrated knowledge base on SharePoint for all TSF-related documentation.
General dam safety (inspections, reporting) and construction support (soil testing, QA inspections).

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Reporting to the Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer (RTFE), the Dam Safety Intern will support the safe operation and construction of Waihi's tailings storage facilities. Key responsibilities include assisting with dam safety inspections and monitoring, supporting construction QA/QC and field testing, preparing dam performance reports and dashboards, maintaining TSF documentation and data, and helping ensure compliance with regulatory and operational requirements.

Qualifications
