Job summary

Whakaata Māori is seeking an experienced UX Designer to join the Hangarau team in Auckland. You will lead user experience from research through to wireframes and final designs, ensuring digital products reflect Māori identity and accessibility standards.

You'll collaborate with product teams and engineers to deliver user-centered solutions, build design systems, and champion best practices for inclusive digital experiences. This full-time role is based at our East Tāmaki head office.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end UX design across Whakaata Māori's digital product portfolio from research to post-launch optimization.
  • Conduct user research and usability testing to understand user needs and opportunities.
  • Create user journeys, wireframes, prototypes, user flows and design specifications.
  • Design intuitive, accessible digital experiences that reflect te ao Māori values.
  • Collaborate with Product Owners and Software Engineers to deliver high-quality user experiences.
  • Develop and maintain design systems, style guides and reusable components.
  • Champion accessibility and drive continuous UX improvements across products.

We are looking for an experienced UX Designer to join our Hangarau (Technology) team.

Reporting to the Senior Product Manager, you'll play a key role in designing intuitive, accessible and culturally meaningful digital experiences across Whakaata Māori's websites and applications. You'll lead the user experience design process from research and discovery through to wireframes, prototypes and final designs, ensuring our digital products meet the needs of our audiences while reflecting the values and identity of Whakaata Māori.

Working closely with Product Owners, Software Engineers, Marketing and other stakeholders, you'll use research and data to influence product direction and deliver user-centred solutions that create real impact.

This is a full-time position based at our East Tāmaki head office.

Lead the end-to-end UX design process across the Whakaata Māori digital product portfolio, guiding products from initial research to post-launch optimization through key stages such as research, ideation, prototyping, and testing.

Conduct user research, usability testing and audience analysis to understand user needs, behaviours and opportunities

Create user journeys, wireframes, prototypes, user flows and design specifications.

Design intuitive, accessible and culturally appropriate digital experiences.

Collaborate with Product Owners and Software Engineers to deliver high-quality user experiences.

Develop and maintain design systems, style guides and reusable design components.

Champion accessibility standards and identify opportunities to continually improve user experience.

Produce clear design documentation and ensure best practice UX methodologies are followed.

Contribute to continuous improvement across digital products and design processes.

Qualification in Design, Human Computer Interaction, Digital Media or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.

Experience designing user experiences for websites and digital applications.

Strong proficiency using design and prototyping tools such as Figma.

Experience conducting user research and translating insights into practical design solutions.

Excellent understanding of UX principles, interaction design and accessibility standards.

Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.

Excellent planning, organisation and problem-solving skills.

Exposure to te ao Māori and a commitment to developing your te reo Māori capability.

Previous experience in a similar UX Design role will be highly regarded.
