Job summary

Awanui Labs, part of Awanui Group, is seeking a dedicated Trainee for our Hamilton Patient Services team. This fixed-term, part-time role (50 hours per fortnight) runs from 12 October 2026 to 23 May 2027.

You will support blood sample collection, specimen handling, and customer service, with optional weekend/public holiday shifts as rostered. Learn hands-on in a modern lab with automated systems and a supportive team.

Awanui Labs is a part of Awanui Group, the largest network of human and veterinary pathology laboratories in New Zealand. Our team of specialist pathologists, scientists, technicians, phlebotomists, couriers, and shared services personnel deliver a world-class service that together collects, analyses, and reports over 7 million patient results annually.

Our Patient Services Department is responsible for the collection of blood samples and handling contained specimens, i.e., human blood, faeces, urine, tissue etc from patients within the community and the hospital. These samples are then processed and tested in our state-of-the-art medical laboratory.

About the Role

Our Patient Services Department is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Trainee to join our team in Hamilton. This is a fixed-term, part-time position (50 hours per fortnight), commencing 12 October 2026 through to 23 May 2027. In addition to the rostered 50 hours per fortnight, you will also be required to work occasional public holidays and weekends as part of the roster. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in a patient‑focused healthcare environment. Working alongside an experienced and supportive team, you'll develop practical skills in workplace drug testing and specimen collection while building confidence in delivering high‑quality patient services.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with workplace drug testing services under supervision, ensuring testing procedures are completed accurately and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Provide professional customer service and administrative support while contributing to the efficient day‑to‑day operation of the Hamilton collection centre.

If you are not currently registered with the Medical Science Council of New Zealand, we will support the successful candidate to work towards registration and qualification as a Medical Laboratory Pre‑Analytical Technician within two years of employment.
