Job summary

Awanui Labs is seeking Trainee Histology staff in Wellington. This permanent, part-time role is part of a rotating roster with weekday and weekend shifts to support hospital histology services.

Ideal for students or those early in their lab career who are eager to learn, detail-oriented and enjoy teamwork in a supportive environment. Training and guidance will be provided as you develop histology skills.

Qualifications

  • Good attention to detail, organisation, and record-keeping skills.

Responsibilities

  • Receipts, process and store specimens correctly, prioritising urgent specimens.
  • Prioritise and organise work to meet deadlines and turn-around times.
  • Perform tests in accordance with established protocols and methods.
  • Understand the basic principles of the Department's methods and protocols.
  • Set up and operate laboratory equipment as per manuals.
  • Carry out equipment checks, calibrations, maintenance and quality control and report issues.
  • Use LIS to generate work lists and enter data.

About the role | Mō te tūranga:

Our Histology Department is seeking enthusiastic and motivated Trainees to join our team at Wellington Hospital. These are permanent, part-time positions working across a rotating roster, with flexibility to work weekdays and weekends depending on service needs.

These roles are ideal for those looking to gain hands-on experience and develop their skills in histology. We welcome applications from students and those at the beginning of their laboratory career who are eager to learn, have good attention to detail, and enjoy working as part of a supportive team. This is a great opportunity to build your laboratory experience while learning from an experienced Histology team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Receipts, process and stores specimens correctly, giving appropriate priority to urgent specimens.
  • Prioritise and organise work to meet established deadlines and turn-around times.
  • Perform tests in accordance with the protocols and methods established.
  • Understand the basic principles and techniques of the methods and protocols used within the Department.
  • Set up and operate the laboratory equipment in accordance with the Department’s methods and procedure manuals.
  • Carry out and records the required equipment checks, calibrations, maintenance and quality control as required, including recognising problems and informing the appropriate person.
  • Use the LIS proficiently including generation of work lists and entering data as appropriate.

To be successful in this role you need to have:
  • A willingness to learn and the ability to follow laboratory procedures and quality guidelines carefully.
  • A positive, team-focused approach with good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good attention to detail, organisation, and record-keeping skills.
  • The ability to take initiative and work reliably in a busy laboratory environment, with support and guidance from the wider team.
  • A commitment to developing your skills and knowledge in histology.
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand.

If you are not currently registered with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand, we will support the successful candidate to work towards registration and qualification as a Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician within two years of employment.
