Job summary

Orica invites applications for a Trainee Blasting Assistant – Mining & Quarrying in Stockton, Westport, South Island NZ. This 12-month fixed-term role supports blasting operations and safe, environmentally conscious delivery of bulk explosives on site.

You will work closely with Shotfirers and On Bench Supervisors to load, tie, and fire blasts, while observing strict safety and quality standards in a dynamic mining and quarry environment. Training and development opportunities are available.

Qualifications

• Exposure to loading blast holes is desirable but not required.
• Able to pass security checks to obtain a Dangerous Goods licence.
• Positive, team-focused attitude with safety priority.
• Basic mechanical understanding is advantageous.

About the role

We are thrilled to offer an exceptional opportunity for a Trainee Blasting Assistant – Mining & Quarrying to join our team in Stockton, Westport, South Island NZ, working on 4 days on 4 days off roster. This is a 12-month fixed-term role.

In this role, you will play a vital part in delivering a high-quality service of bulk explosive delivery to our customers. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the safe and environmentally conscious execution of blasting operations. Working closely with the Shotfirer or On Bench Supervisor/s on site, you will perform tasks as directed, including loading, tying, and firing blasts.

What you will be doing

• Assisting shotfirers and Mobile Manufacturing Units (MMU) Truck Operators as required;
• Assist with the 'hands-on' delivery of explosive products down pre-drilled blast holes on mine and quarry sites;
• Working in tight unison with your teammates to provide an excellence in service to our valued customers;
• Demonstrating and setting the example of our key company value: 'Safety is our Priority, Always';
• At all times acting with integrity and respect.

What you will bring

• Exposure to loading of blast holes is highly preferable but not required;
• Ability to pass all required security checks in which to obtain a Dangerous Goods licence;
• An excellent, positive and team-based attitude where you look out for your mates;
• A basic mechanical comprehension is advantageous, but not essential;
• A willingness to learn and a focus on career development.
