Technical Lead Engineer - Voice Services

As the Lead Design Engineer for Voice Services, you will provide technical leadership and design ownership for Tait's broadband voice application enablement initiatives. Working within the engineering team, you will help shape, guide, and deliver voice services from design through to market release. You will provide technical leadership across the voice stack architecture, integration, and long-term evolution of voice services, ensuring Tait's in-house Push to Talk over Broadband solution and selected third-party voice applications and services are delivered with quality, reliability, and alignment to product needs.

The Lead Design Engineer is accountable for understanding the voice stack architecture in depth, identifying and solving architectural challenges, and guiding the applications team through design, implementation, and delivery. Working closely with Product and Solution Architects, who provide product direction, architectural guardrails, and technology alignment to ensure engineering design choices support the broader platform strategy, customer outcomes, and commercial needs.

With significant offshore development contributing to delivery, you will also provide technical oversight of externally developed work, ensuring quality standards, architectural integrity, critical system knowledge, and intellectual property remain protected within Tait.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Provide end-to-end technical ownership for Tait's voice services, ensuring architectural coherence, quality, and long-term maintainability.
  • Act as the technical authority for voice-related architecture, design decisions, and engineering practices.
  • Collaborate with engineers, Product Managers, and Solution Architects to translate product requirements into deliverable technical solutions aligned with organisational strategy.
  • Identify and resolve complex problems within the voice stack architecture, guiding the applications team through design, implementation, and delivery challenges.
  • Lead application enablement for voice services, including Tait's in-house Push to Talk over Broadband solution and integration with selected third-party voice applications and services.
  • Define and guide the technical direction for tactical voice service enhancements that deliver near-term commercial value.
  • Lead the technical oversight of externally developed engineering work, ensuring outsourced delivery meets Tait's quality standards, architectural intent, and long-term product interests.
  • Ensure intellectual property, system knowledge, and key technical decisions remain within the Tait organisation.
  • Identify and proactively manage technical risks related to scalability, operability, security, and maintainability within the voice domain.
  • Act as a senior technical authority and mentor, setting engineering standards, reviewing designs, and supporting the development of high-quality engineering practices across the voice services team.

You are an outstanding senior engineer and technical leader, recognised for your ability to operate across complex communications systems and drive quality outcomes across the full product lifecycle. You bring a deep understanding of voice architectures and are comfortable owning difficult technical decisions in a fast-moving, delivery-focused environment.

You will bring:

  • Proven experience designing and delivering complex voice or communications software solutions across the full development lifecycle.
  • Deep familiarity with voice stack architectures, VoIP, PTT, or equivalent communications protocols and application enablement frameworks.
  • Strong architecture and design evaluation skills, including the ability to compare design approaches and assess long-term impacts on quality, scalability, and maintainability.
  • The ability to debug, diagnose, and resolve complex technical issues within voice systems, and to guide others in correcting faulty designs.
  • Confidence to review and critique designs, and to train and mentor others in sound engineering and design practices.
  • Experience working with or overseeing externally developed software, with a strong focus on quality, sustainability, and retention of system knowledge.
  • Comfort working collaboratively across engineering, product, and architecture functions, balancing hands-on technical leadership with the need to align designs to agreed guardrails and long-term technology direction.
  • The judgement and maturity to assess technical and delivery risks and respond appropriately.
  • Awareness of security best practice and how emerging security legislation affects voice service delivery and ongoing product support.
