Job summary

Downer & Company in Invercargill is seeking a Surfacing Worker to join our road maintenance team, delivering surfacing projects across the region. The role is physically active, outdoors, and involves supporting a crew to complete asphalt, chipseal, and pavement work with a strong emphasis on safety and quality.

You will work alongside experienced operators, perform pre-start checks, handle materials safely, and contribute to keeping our transport networks safe and reliable for communities.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in civil construction, road maintenance, surfacing or a similar industry.
• Strong commitment to health and safety.
• The ability to work well within a team environment.
• Good communication skills and a proactive attitude.
• Physical fitness and willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• A full Class 1 Driver's Licence.

Responsibilities

• Carry out surfacing and road maintenance activities as directed by the Foreperson or Operations Supervisor.
• Assist with asphalt, chipseal and general pavement construction works.
• Complete pre-start inspections and basic maintenance checks on equipment.
• Load, unload and handle materials safely and minimise wastage.
• Support the wider crew to meet productivity, quality and safety targets.
• Complete daily records, reports and other site documentation as required.
• Build positive relationships with road users, residents and stakeholders while on site.

We are looking for a Surfacing Worker to join our Invercargill team and play a hands‑on role in delivering road maintenance and surfacing projects across the region.

As a Surfacing Worker, you'll work alongside experienced operators and crew members carrying out a range of road surfacing and maintenance activities across Southland. You'll support the delivery of projects safely, efficiently and to a high standard, helping ensure roads and transport networks remain safe and reliable for our communities.

This is a physically active role where you'll work outdoors in a team environment and contribute to a variety of projects throughout the year.

You’ll ideally have:
