Job summary

IDEA Services is recruiting casual Support Workers to empower individuals with intellectual disabilities to live independently at home and in the community. Shifts are offered as needed with no guaranteed hours, requiring flexibility across days, evenings, sleepovers and weekends.

You will build daily living skills, support personal care, encourage goals and hobbies, and strengthen connections with whānau and the wider community while ensuring dignity and safety.

Mō te tūnga | About the role

This is a casual role with no guaranteed hours, where shifts are offered as needs arise. It can be a great option for students looking for additional work over the summer during study breaks. You’ll need flexibility to work across days, evenings, sleepovers and weekends.

As a Support Worker, you will empower individuals with intellectual disabilities to lead fulfilling lives at home and within their community. This is meaningful work where you can be creative and make every day interesting and engaging for those you support. The role includes:

  • Building independence:Help people grow their daily living skills, from catching public transport to cooking their own meals.
  • Supporting daily life:Assist with personal care routines such as showering, getting dressed, taking medication and looking after their own home.
  • Pursuing goals and interests:Encourage and support people to engage in their interests, hobbies, and personal goals.
  • Staying healthy and well:Support healthy choices and overall wellbeing in a way that works for each person.
  • Supporting complex behaviours:Provide calm, consistent support utilising positive behaviour strategies while ensuring dignity, safety, and respect.
  • Creating connections:Support and strengthen relationships with whānau, colleagues, and the wider community.

  • No prior experience in the health and disability sector is necessary, but a positive attitude, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn is highly valued.
  • Availability to work rostered shifts, including mornings, evenings, overnight sleepovers, and regular weekend shifts.
  • Be prepared to work with people with challenging behaviours and/or physical disabilities or other health needs.
  • Comfortable and proficient in using computers and tablets daily.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Physical fitness to provide necessary physical support.
  • A Full NZ drivers licence
