Job summary

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is seeking Student Ambassadors to support new students across Kelburn, Te Aro and Pipitea campuses. You’ll lead UNI101 peer groups, help students transition to university life and build confidence while developing presentation and communication skills.

This casual, campus-based role offers paid work and opportunities to earn Kitea Impact Programme points. Successful applicants will be current students, available for Orientation 2027, training

Qualifications

• Ability to problem solve and use initiative.
• Proven knowledge of the University environment and support services available to students.

Responsibilities

• Welcome and orient new students through campus tours and orientation activities.
• Build peer connections by sharing experiences and study strategies.
• Act as a peer mentor to help students develop confidence and belonging.
• Connect students with academic, wellbeing, cultural, and social support services.
• Model inclusive, respectful, proactive behaviour reflecting University values.
• Facilitate referrals to University services when additional support is needed.

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting Student Ambassadors to join the Te Maihi - Student Success & Experience team on a casual basis.

This is a campus-based role and includes opportunities to work at the Kelburn, Te Aro, and Pipitea campuses.

As a Student Ambassador, you’ll have the chance to:

Gain valuable leadership and mentoring experience as a UNI101 Peer Group Leader.

Help students navigate their transition to university, build connections, develop confidence, and access key support services.

Improve your presentation and communication skills.

Connect with fellow student leaders.

Get paid for your efforts!

Plus, you’ll earn points towards the Kitea Impact Programme.

Key responsibilities:

• Welcome and orient new students through campus tours, Orientation activities and peer mentor through the UNI101 first year transition programme.
• Build meaningful peer-to-peer connections by sharing personal experiences, offering practical study strategies, and providing encouragement throughout the transition to university life.
• Act as a peer mentor by helping students develop confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging within the University community.
• Connect students with academic, wellbeing, cultural, and social support services, ensuring they know where and how to access help when needed.

Model positive engagement by demonstrating inclusive, respectful, approachable, and proactive behaviour that reflects University values.

Recognise when students may need additional support and facilitate referrals to appropriate University services.

You will be a positive, approachable, and inclusive peer role model, demonstrating respect, professionalism, cultural awareness, and integrity in all interactions.

Key requirements:

• Currently enrolled at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington (also in 2027).
• Available to work at New Student Orientation 2027 and be a UNI101 Peer Mentor (Tri 1, 4 weeks).
• Available to attend all trainings.
• Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
• Proven ability to work as part of a large team as well as independently.
• The ability to problem solve and use initiative.
• Proven knowledge of the University environment and support services available to students.
• Proven ability to work with a diverse range of people.
