Job summary

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora – Hawke's Bay Hospital is seeking a Sterile Sciences Technician to join the Perioperative Unit. You will help clean, inspect, sterilise and prepare reusable medical devices and instruments to the highest safety standards.

This hands-on role requires meticulous attention to detail, teamwork and a commitment to patient safety. A NZ Sterilising Technology Certificate Level 4 (or approved equivalent) and CSSD/healthcare experience are preferred.

Qualifications

  • NZ Sterilising Technology Certificate Level 4 or approved equivalent.
  • Experience in sterile sciences, CSSD or healthcare environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and patient safety.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Proactive learning and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Clean, inspect, sterilise and reprocess reusable medical devices and surgical instruments.
  • Maintain compliance with industry standards and track instruments.
  • Support surgical and clinical teams across the Perioperative Unit.
  • Assist with quality improvement initiatives.

About the Role

As a Sterile Sciences Technician, you will play a vital role in ensuring reusable medical devices and surgical instruments are cleaned, inspected, sterilised, and prepared to the highest quality and safety standards. Working within the Perioperative Unit, you will contribute to the safe and efficient delivery of healthcare services by supporting surgical and clinical teams across the organisation.

This is a hands - on, technical role where attention to detail is essential. You will work with specialised equipment and instrument tracking systems, maintain compliance with industry standards, and contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives. As part of a collaborative team, you will help ensure that critical equipment is available, safe, and ready for patient care when it is needed most.

Our Sterile Sciences team is an integral part of the Perioperative Unit, providing sterilisation and reusable medical device reprocessing services that support clinical teams across Hawkes Bay Hospital. You will join a dedicated team committed to quality, safety, and excellence in patient care.

About you

As a Sterile Sciences Technician, you will bring:

  • A New Zealand Sterilising Technology Certificate Level 4 (or approved equivalent)
