The Opportunity

As an engineer for this forward‑thinking scaleup, you will not be locked in the backroom implementing specs sheets—you’ll be talking to the customers/teachers who already love their product and figuring out how to make it work even better for them. This position will suit an Engineer with a good product sense who is comfortable working relatively autonomously but who can also collaborate well both internally and externally. This opportunity is based in our fully renovated Auckland office. We have a hybrid arrangement of Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in office. Tuesdays and Thursdays are work from home.

What You’ll Do
  • Review existing prioritisation processes and provide guidance on improvements, making decisions to guide engineering progress and impact
  • Lead discussion and continuous improvement on design and development of complex software architecture, systems, and platforms
  • Mentor and coach engineering staff by role‑modeling best in class engineering standards and providing direct feedback that supports high quality, tested, secure and maintainable code
  • Act as direct reporting line for junior and intermediate engineers
  • Drive engineering excellence and continuous improvement
  • Develop and maintain functionality for the Kami Application
  • Build and maintain the Kami code base and code quality including JavaScript, HTML, CSS, React, AngularJS, VueJS, Java, and Rails
  • Be an enabler – empower and support engineering staff to build scalable, reliable, and secure systems
  • Own the partnership with the wider cross‑functional team members and drive effective collaboration with product managers, designers, and customers
  • Engage in discovery and understand holistically the requirements from all sides
  • Be curious, resourceful and adaptable in their partnerships with other teams
  • Demonstrate ability to shape strategy and prioritise work across cross‑functional staff
  • Be able to understand data, commercial information, and technical requirements to shape solutions for ambiguous problems
  • Demonstrate a structured, iterative approach to problem solving
  • Consider multiple solutions for a problem, have a testing framework, build various implementation approaches, and evaluate success
What You’ll Bring
  • 9+ years experience developing web‑based applications for users globally
  • Deep fluency working with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and experience working with large Single Page Applications (SPAs)
  • Strong experience with frontend frameworks/libraries, e.g., React, AngularJS, VueJS
  • Experience with backend tools such as Rails, Rust & Typescript
  • Strong product sense and ability to work with customers to design bespoke solutions
  • Experience with developing high‑performance code, profiling with Chrome Developer tools
  • You adopt the latest tech fast
  • Great communication and engagement skills
  • A positive, passionate and collaborative approach
  • Technologies we use: we’re open to engineers with any full‑stack experience, but FYR our toolbox is Typescript, React, Ruby, Rails, Cockroach, Kafka, Datadog, and Google Cloud Platform
