Job description

Jora New Zealand will close on 9th September 2026. Thank you for being with us, we are cheering you on as you continue your career journey.

Christchurch | Full-time | Global product business | Advanced energy technology

This is an opportunity to join a global technology company designing and developing advanced energy products used in demanding environments around the world.

Based at the company’s Christchurch R&D centre, this role will suit an experienced Mechanical Engineer with strong product design experience, particularly across injection-moulded plastics, enclosures, connectors, tooling, prototyping and production-ready mechanical design.

You will be working on complex electromechanical products where mechanical design plays a critical role in protecting and connecting electronics across a wide range of operating conditions. This is a hands‑on, fast‑paced R&D role where you will take parts and assemblies from early concept through to prototype, testing, supplier engagement, tooling and production.

What you’ll be doing

You will design mechanical parts and assemblies for advanced electronic hardware products, with a strong focus on injection‑moulded plastic components and robust enclosure design.

You will take ownership of design work from concept through to production, including CAD modelling, prototyping, drawings, supplier collaboration, design verification, issue investigation and production support.

You will work closely with electrical, firmware, manufacturing, reliability, sourcing and quality teams to solve complex product challenges and ensure designs are manufacturable, reliable and suitable for long‑term use.

You will also be involved in supplier and tooling discussions, supporting the transition from prototype to production and helping resolve technical issues during development, testing and manufacturing.

What you’ll bring

You will bring around 8+ years’ experience in mechanical product design, ideally within an R&D or product development environment.

Strong experience with injection‑moulded plastics is highly desirable. Experience with sheet metal, CNC‑machined parts, connectors, electronics enclosures, sealing, environmental protection or long‑life product design would also be highly relevant.

You should be comfortable producing high‑quality CAD models and clear production drawings, working with suppliers and manufacturers, interpreting test results, and making sound engineering decisions under time pressure.

Experience with SolidWorks, particularly in a PDM environment, would be well regarded.

You’ll be well suited to this role if you have experience with:
  • Injection‑moulded plastic part design
  • Mechanical product design from concept through to production
  • Electronics enclosures, housings, sealing or environmental protection
  • Connector design or integration
  • Sheet metal and CNC‑machined components
  • CAD modelling and production drawings
  • SolidWorks and PDM systems
  • Prototyping, including 3D printing
  • Supplier, tooling or contract manufacturer engagement
  • Verification testing and failure investigation
  • Designing for reliability, manufacturability and long product life
  • Working in cross‑functional teams across mechanical, electrical, firmware, quality and manufacturing
What will help you stand out

You may have worked in energy technology, electronics hardware, appliances, aerospace, medical devices, industrial products, telecommunications hardware, automotive electronics, consumer hardware or another physical product environment.

Experience designing products that need to operate reliably in demanding conditions would be especially useful. Exposure to connectors, sealed enclosures, plastics tooling, high‑volume manufacturing, overseas suppliers or US‑based production environments would also be valuable.

What’s on offer
  • Competitive salary
  • Quarterly bonus
  • Stock options
  • Medical insurance for you and your immediate family
  • Annual merit reviews
  • Long service leave
  • Career growth opportunities in a fast‑paced engineering environment
Eligibility

Applicants must already hold New Zealand work rights. Sponsorship is not available for this role. Candidates based elsewhere in New Zealand may be considered if they are open to relocating to Christchurch.
