Job summary

MBIE's Legislation team in Wellington Central seeks a Solicitor with up to 5 years PQE to support the development and implementation of legislation across MBIE's regulatory systems. You will provide legal advice on regulatory matters and contribute drafting instructions to legislative projects.

You will collaborate with in-house lawyers, policy analysts and the Parliamentary Counsel Office, build stakeholder relationships and deepen your understanding of government decision-making processes.

We are seeking lawyers with up to 5 years' post-qualification experience (PQE). Ranges are indicative only, with Solicitor 1 generally aligning to up to 3 years. PQE and Solicitor 2 generally aligning to around 3-5 years PQE

In this role, you will work alongside experienced in-house lawyers, policy analysts and the Parliamentary Counsel Office to support MBIE's core purpose of growing New Zealand for all.You will have an interest in public law and legislation, strong research and analytical skills, and a willingness to learn.

The role involves supporting the development and implementation of legislation across MBIE's diverse regulatory systems. You may also contribute by providing legal advice on regulatory and operational matters.

You will have opportunities to contribute to legislative projects, prepare legal advice and drafting instructions, build stakeholder relationships, and develop your understanding of government decision‑making and the legislative process.

About our team

Our Legislation team provides legal advice on the development and amendment of primary and secondary legislation across MBIE's 18 regulatory systems. This creates opportunities for our lawyers to work on legislation across a range of different regulatory systems depending on their experience and interests.

As a Solicitor, you will work with some autonomy in a collaborative and collegial team.

You will be supported by colleagues of all experience levels and will gain exposure to some of MBIE's most complex and high‑profile legislative matters.

Skills and Experience Required

• A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or equivalent qualification.
• Eligibility to obtain, or hold, a New Zealand practising certificate.
• Up to 5 years' post‑qualification experience, or equivalent relevant legal experience.
• Strong legal research, writing and analytical skills.
• A practical, solutions‑focused approach.

Successful candidates may be appointed at either Solicitor 1 or Solicitor 2 level, with remuneration and appointment level determined based on skills, experience and PQE.
