Job summary

Westpac New Zealand Ltd is seeking a Software Engineer to contribute hands-on engineering within a squad, delivering high-quality digital experiences for customers and reducing technical debt while improving ways of working.

You will collaborate with stakeholders across the bank, apply agile practices, mentor teammates, and help shape the technical direction of your squad in a supportive, inclusive environment.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of software engineering experience
• Strong experience in Java, React, or mobile development
• Experience in Agile teams with DevOps responsibilities
• Exposure to mentoring and knowledge sharing within teams
• Institutional banking experience is a plus

Job description

About the Role

To contribute hands‑on technical expertise to deliver high‑quality, resilient digital solutions, working collaboratively within a squad to build modern software, reduce technical debt, and continuously improve ways of working. As a Software Engineer in the Digital team, you will make a strong contribution within your squad. You’ll collaborate with key stakeholders around the bank to ensure we: Deliver amazing new digital experiences for our customers Build in‑line with industry best practice Comply with our standards and policies Avoid technical debt Support and role model agreed work practices Contribute to sprint goals that align with delivery, customer, and strategic objectives This role is primarily focused on hands‑on engineering, collaboration, and technical excellence. You will contribute to shaping the technical direction of your squad and support continuous improvement initiatives.

What will you bring?

• 3+ years of experience in software engineering
• Strong experience in one or more of Java, React, or Mobile development
• Experience working in Agile teams with DevOps responsibilities
• Exposure to mentoring and knowledge sharing within teams
• Institutional banking experience is a plus
