Job summary

Jobtailor in Wellington, New Zealand is seeking an experienced backend engineer to build and maintain Spring Boot services and shared tooling. You will shape integration patterns with REST APIs, event-driven workflows, and database interactions, while embedding robust CI/CD, security, and scalability.

You will collaborate across engineering teams to deliver features in shared tooling and platforms, work with API gateways and Kubernetes, and tackle complex challenges that affect Spring Boot

Qualifications

• 7+ years of industry experience with backend systems.
• Strong hands-on Spring Boot, Spring Framework, and Java expertise.
• Experience building and managing integration services and microservices.
• Strong experience with RESTful APIs and API gateways like Kong.
• Experience with messaging platforms (MQ, Kafka) and Postgres databases.
• Familiarity with SOAP/Webservices for legacy integrations.
• Proficiency with CI/CD pipelines and tools (Jenkins, Spinnaker, Renovate).
• Kubernetes and containerised environments (EKS/AKS/OpenShift).
• Experience with GenAI-assisted development tools.
• Desirable: Node, TypeScript, Yeoman, Python; cloud exposure (AWS/Azure).
• Desirable: security patterns (JWT, OAuth) and observability (Dynatrace, Splunk, OTel).
• Banking/Financial services familiarity is a plus.

Requirements

• Strong hands-on experience with Spring Boot, Spring Framework, and Java
• Experience building and managing integration services, including microservices
• Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs and using API gateways such as Kong
• Experience with messaging and event platforms such as MQ or Kafka, and relational databases such as Postgres
• Familiarity with SOAP/Webservices for legacy integrations
• Strong hands-on experience with developer experience tools and platforms
• Experience using software engineering tools such as bootstraps, kickstarters, or generators
• Experience using CI/CD pipelines and tooling such as Jenkins, Spinnaker, and Renovate
• Experience with Kubernetes and containerised environments such as EKS, AKS, or OpenShift
• Experience using GenAI-assisted development tools
• Desirable: experience with Node, TypeScript, Yeoman, and Python
• Desirable: cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, including networking and firewall concepts
• Desirable: security patterns including secret management, JWT, and OAuth
• Desirable: observability tools such as Dynatrace, Splunk, or OTel
• Desirable: banking or financial services experience
• Significant industry experience, typically 7+ years
• Strong collaboration skills in Agile and hybrid/remote environments
