Job summary

Westpac New Zealand is seeking a Senior Engineer to lead backend development for payments experiences. You will design, build, and evolve solutions across Java/Springboot, with a focus on scalable, secure, and customer-centric payment capabilities.

You'll mentor engineers, work with product and platform partners, and ensure delivery of resilient services within a cross-functional squad.

• Design, develop, test, and maintain applications and integration solutions
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues promptly, with afterhours support when required
• Ensure best practices in design, coding standards, performance, and security
• Create and maintain documentation throughout the SDLC
• Implement changes aligned with design specifications and evolving business needs
• Analyse recurring issues and lead continuous improvement initiatives
• Maintain and refine support procedures to ensure resilience and minimise downtime
• Ensure governance standards compliance

As a Senior Engineer, you will provide technical leadership, drive engineering best practices, and contribute to solution design and architectural decisions. You will mentor other engineers, collaborate closely with product and platform partners, and ensure the delivery of scalable, resilient, and customer‑centric payments capabilities.

• Design, develop, test, and maintain applications and integration solutions
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues promptly, and participating in afterhours support when required
• Ensure best practices in design, coding standards, performance, and security
• Create and maintain documentation throughout the SDLC to support transparency and knowledge sharing
• Implement changes aligned with design specifications and evolving business needs
• Analyse recurring issues and lead continuous improvement initiatives
• Maintain and refine support procedures to ensure resilience and minimise downtime
• Ensure compliance with governance standards

• At least 5+ years of professional engineering experience in Backend development in Java and Springboot.
• Experience in DevOps such as CI/CD pipelines, containerisation and deployment automation
• Proficient in unit testing, code reviews, and debugging
• Ability to break down complex problems and deliver practical solutions
• Strong understanding of software architecture and design principles
• Integrates AI effectively into engineering workflows to improve quality and efficiency, demonstrates strong judgement on appropriate use, and coaches others on responsible AI practices
