ASB Bank is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (COBOL) in Auckland to support core host systems and contribute to a transformational journey. You will work in an autonomous, agile squad, shaping engineering outcomes and mentoring peers on software engineering practices.

Qualifications

• Proven COBOL development experience in mainframe environments.
• Experience mentoring other Software Engineers and driving best practices.
• Familiarity with SDLC and compliance requirements.

• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to understand needs.
• Design, develop, test and maintain software per SDLC and compliance requirements.
• Mentor and uplift software engineering practices within the squad.
• Take ownership of technical solutions and drive continuous improvement for customers.

As a Senior Software Engineer, (COBOL) you will be part of the team supporting our Core Host systems and will have the opportunity to grow with us on our transformational journey.

Being part of the Engineering Practice at ASB we encourage our teams to work autonomously in an agile way while actively growing their skills and expertise to continuously improve outcomes for our customers.

You'll have the opportunity to get hands-on with some interesting and complex pieces of work on an enterprise scale, all while being part of a smaller squad that makes their own decisions about how to work through prioritisation, so your voice will be heard, and your opinions valued.

We advocate for T-Shaped teams which will take you through all facets of engineering in any given day. We are looking for a mix of technical skills to support the following activities:

• Work with internal stakeholders to understand their needs
• Software design, analysis, development, and testing in accordance with compliance requirements (SDLC)
• Commitment to respond to customer requests and keeping the lights on for the existing solutions.
• Mentoring and uplifting Software Engineering practices

We'll value for your proven initiative, problem solving abilities and leadership skills as we look for every engineer to lead from their position.

We are looking for an individual that will take ownership of their technical solutions, drive continuous change for the squad and customers to ensure we are delivering best possible outcomes for all. We advocate agile, fully cross functional teams which will take you through all facets of engineering in any given day. We are looking for a mix of technical skills, including:

• COBOL-74 or equivalent (essential)
• Unisys ClearPath MCP (or similar mainframe environment) (desirable)
• Experience in coaching and mentoring other Software Engineers
