Job summary

Turbo Staff is seeking an experienced Senior Professional Quantity Surveyor to lead a portfolio of projects in Hamilton, New Zealand. This senior client-facing role focuses on cost management, procurement strategy, and delivering commercial advice from feasibility through to final account.

Ideal candidates bring 8+ years in commercial construction or civil infrastructure, strong contract knowledge, and NZIQS registration or progression.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years' experience as a Quantity Surveyor.
  • Background in commercial construction or civil infrastructure.
  • Strong contractual and commercial knowledge.
  • Experience with pre- and post-contract QS services.
  • NZIQS membership or working toward registration is valued.
  • Ability to manage procurement, risk and contract matters.

Responsibilities

  • Provide end-to-end quantity surveying and cost management.
  • Prepare feasibility studies and detailed cost plans.

The Role

This is a senior client-facing position where you will take ownership of a portfolio of projects and provide trusted commercial and cost management advice throughout the project lifecycle.

The successful candidate will ideally bring experience from either a commercial construction or civil infrastructure background, combined with strong contractual and commercial capability.

You will work closely with clients, consultants, contractors and project stakeholders, providing practical advice around cost, procurement, risk and contractual matters. This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys the variety of consultancy work and wants to be involved in projects from feasibility and pre-construction through to procurement, delivery and final account.

Responsibilities
  • Providing end-to-end professional quantity surveying and cost management services across a diverse portfolio of projects.
  • Preparing feasibility studies, preliminary estimates, detailed cost plans and budgets.
  • Developing and managing Schedules of Quantities, tender documentation and pricing information.
  • Advising clients on procurement strategies, tendering and contractor selection.
  • Managing tender processes, including tender analysis, evaluations, negotiations and recommendations.
  • Providing comprehensive post-contract quantity surveying and contract administration services.
  • Monitoring project costs, budgets, variations, progress claims, forecasts and final accounts.
  • Reviewing contractual obligations, identifying commercial risks and providing advice on potential claims and entitlements.
  • Supporting clients and project teams with contractual negotiations, variations, extensions of time and dispute resolution where required.
  • Undertaking value management and value engineering to improve project outcomes while maintaining quality and functionality.
  • Preparing financial reports and providing clear, commercially focused advice to clients and stakeholders.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, contractors, consultants and other project stakeholders.
  • Taking responsibility for project delivery while maintaining a high standard of professional advice and documentation.
  • Contributing to the development of junior and intermediate QS professionals through mentoring and technical guidance.
  • Representing the business professionally and helping to develop long-term client relationships and new opportunities.
Skills And Experience
  • 8+ years' experience as a Quantity Surveyor, ideally with a strong background in either commercial construction or civil infrastructure.
  • Professional Quantity Surveying / Cost Management experience with a strong understanding of the PQS consultancy environment.
  • Strong contractual and commercial knowledge, with the ability to confidently interpret contract documentation and advise clients on commercial risk.
  • Proven experience across both pre-contract and post-contract QS services.
  • Strong capability in cost planning, estimating, tendering, procurement and financial management.
  • Experience managing variations, progress claims, final accounts, contractual correspondence and commercial negotiations.
  • Strong understanding of construction methodologies, costs, programmes and project risk.
  • Experience working with a range of contract forms and procurement models.
  • Excellent ability to analyse project information, identify commercial risks and provide practical solutions.
  • Strong client-facing and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to communicate at all levels.
  • Excellent negotiation, report writing and presentation skills.
  • A tertiary qualification in Quantity Surveying, Construction Economics or a related discipline.
  • NZIQS membership / Registered QS status or working towards registration would be highly regarded.
  • Experience across infrastructure, civil, commercial, education, healthcare or other complex construction environments would be advantageous.
  • A commercially minded, professional and relationship-focused approach.
