Job summary

Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) is seeking a Senior Project Manager to lead high‑quality project delivery for Technology Initiatives. The role sits in the Technology Portfolio team, covering transformation projects across infrastructure, engineering and workplace.

Based in Wellington or Auckland, the hybrid role requires three days in the office with flexible work arrangements. You will report to the Head of Portfolio and drive cross‑domain projects, budget management, risk mitigation and stakeholder

Qualifications

  • Significant experience delivering major IT projects.
  • Experience in financial management, estimating and investment planning for IT upgrades.
  • Ability to present to senior stakeholders with confidence.
  • Proven knowledge of Agile delivery planning and management in a product-focused environment.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and manage interdependencies between initiatives crossing Technology Domains.
  • Ensure costs and finances are managed within budget to reduce operating costs.
  • Identify, monitor and control risk to ensure sustainable outcomes and reduce technical debt.
  • Provide estimation and forecasting to support Quarterly Planning Sessions (QPS).
  • Conduct regular project meetings and provide progress reports as required.

We are looking for a Senior Project Manager to deliver high quality project delivery for Technology Initiatives. The Technology Portfolio team covers transformation projects across Technology infrastructure platforms, engineering, and workplace. This team plays a critical role in shaping and delivering a wide span of work that strengthens our foundations, including networks, mainframes, datacentres, operating systems, APIs, integration, colleague technology, and much more. This role can be based in Wellington or Auckland. It is a hybrid role with three days in the office and two days where you can work flexibly. Anchors days in the office are Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Internally this role is title Technical Implementation Lead.

What are 5 day-to-day tasks the person in this role will complete?
  • Identify and manage interdependencies between initiatives and activities that cross Technology Domains.
  • Ensure costs and finances are managed effectively within budget to look to save money and drive down costs of operating and supporting technology investments and support full cost recovery.
  • Identify, monitor and control risk to ensure sustainable business and customer outcomes and to reduce technical debt and security vulnerabilities.
  • Estimation and forecasting required to support the Quarterly Planning Sessions (QPS).
  • Conduct regular project meetings/updates and provide progress reports when required

My management style is to set clear expectations of the work and quality expected, provide flexibility in your approach to achieving that, but to hold you to account for the delivery of the work that was agreed upon. This team works on a 'no surprises' approach - keep your key stakeholders in the loop, and you will find support as you work through the process.

Success will look like ensuring cost effective and high-quality delivery of project work.

What Technical skills are required for this role?

A background in projects related to operating system upgrades, vulnerability remediation, work spanning multiple domains/teams, and high profile stakeholder reporting.

What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role?
  • Significant experience and expertise in the planning and delivery of major IT projects including solving complex problems as they arise.
  • Experience in financial management, estimating and investment planning for major upgrades and changes to IT systems and infrastructure.
  • Ability to confidently present to senior stakeholders.
  • Proven knowledge and experience with the application of Agile delivery planning and management methodologies, systems and approaches. Understand the minutiae of the delivery process in an agile, product focused delivery domain.
