We provide essential hospital, specialist, and community health services across 80+ locations - from large urban centres to rural towns and remote communities.

Our goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders by delivering equitable, accessible and innovative care.

About the Role

The Senior HMC Engineer plays a pivotal technical leadership role, providing expert oversight across complex, enterprise-scale environments and ensuring the delivery of secure, resilient, and high-performing cloud services. Operating at SFIA Level 4, this role combines deep technical expertise with strategic influence, proactively identifying optimisation opportunities, driving continuous improvement initiatives, and shaping technical standards aligned to organisational best practice. Working closely with the Team Lead, Cloud Engineers, Technical Leads, senior stakeholders, and third-party vendors, the Senior Engineer leads solution design and implementation, resolves high-level technical issues, and mentors Engineers to uplift capability across the team. This is a role for a proactive, detail-oriented leader who thrives on complexity, influences outcomes at a tactical level, and is committed to delivering high-quality digital services that meet evolving organisational and community needs.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The Senior HMC Engineer is part of a nationally connected Digital Operations function delivering critical cloud and infrastructure services across the organisation. Working within a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment, the team partners closely with Cloud Engineers, Technical Leads, senior leaders, and third-party vendors to ensure reliable, secure, and high-performing digital services. Operating across national, regional, and local contexts, the service is focused on continuous improvement, innovation, and simplifying ways of working to better support frontline health services. With a strong emphasis on partnership, including engagement with Hauora Māori and Pacific Health teams, the team is committed to delivering equitable, future-focused digital solutions that enable better outcomes for communities across Aotearoa.

About you

You are an experienced ICT professional with a strong track record in technical leadership, delivering high-quality solutions across complex IT environments. You bring a proactive, solutions-focused mindset, with the ability to mentor and guide teams, optimise services, and implement best-practice standards. You thrive in collaborative, fast-paced environments, balancing strategic planning with hands-on technical expertise, and are committed to continuous improvement, safety, and fostering positive, inclusive relationships. With a strong understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, you integrate cultural awareness into your work while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability.

To succeed in this role, you will bring:
  • Over 10 years of experience in ICT, including at least 7 years in technical support roles and 3 years in optimisation and improvement of complex IT environments.
  • Proven experience in technical leadership, mentoring engineers, and contributing to technical standards, processes, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality technical solutions and maintain service stability, availability, and compliance.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, with postgraduate certification or equivalent extensive experience in relevant technologies.
  • Service management and ITIL certifications are highly desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships across teams, vendors, and stakeholders while demonstrating integrity, accountability, and cultural awareness.
