Mercury NZ Limited is seeking a Senior Derivatives Trader in Auckland to develop and execute trading strategies across electricity derivatives, including NZ futures and FTRs. You will market-make on NZ futures, manage portfolio risk, and advance models and algorithmic trading tools while mentoring teammates.
You will work with the Head of Derivatives Trading to optimize generation and retail portfolio performance, using strong mathematical and programming skills and Excel for decision support.
Mercury is a bold future-focused organisation, providing energy and telecommunications to more Kiwis than anyone else, leading the way with renewable energy and working toward a sustainable future. At the heart is our purpose. Taking care of tomorrow: connecting people and place today. This pushes us to do all we can to create a better future for our people, our communities, and Aotearoa New Zealand.
Turn your electricity market knowledge into trading strategies that deliver results. As our Senior Derivatives Trader, you’ll identify trading opportunities, manage financial exposure and help maximise the value of Mercury’s generation and retail portfolio.
Based in Auckland and reporting to the Head of Derivatives Trading, you’ll combine active trading with strategy development across electricity futures, financial transmission rights (FTRs), contracts for difference (CFDs) and options. You’ll contribute directly to trading performance while helping Mercury manage the risks associated with generation, transmission and changing market conditions.
This is a hands-on trading role with scope to improve our models and algorithmic trading tools, build strong market relationships and share your expertise with colleagues.

At Mercury, we believe different backgrounds, experiences and capabilities make us stronger. If this role matches your skills and interests, we encourage you to apply, even if you don’t meet every requirement.
