Job summary

Westpac New Zealand Ltd is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to design, develop and maintain high quality data solutions, with a strong emphasis on Java engineering within the Data Platforms and AI team. You will lead scalable, secure data platforms and data pipelines to support Westpac’s innovative banking products and services.

Collaborate with cross functional teams to deliver robust streaming solutions and APIs, and adopt agile, DevOps and cloud practices to drive continuous improvement in data

Qualifications

• Strong hands-on experience with Snowflake and cloud data warehouses.
• Experience with dbt for data transformation and analytics engineering.
• Advanced Python development for data solutions on cloud platforms.
• Strong SQL development, including query optimisation and complex transforms.
• Experience with Apache Spark (PySpark) for large-scale data processing.
• Proven ability to design and maintain scalable data pipelines.
• Experience scheduling workflows with Apache Airflow.
• Knowledge of data warehousing, data modelling and modern data architectures.
• Experience delivering cloud-based data solutions using Snowflake, dbt, Python, SQL and Azure.

Mō te tūranga | About the Role
The Senior Data Engineer is responsible for designing, developing and maintaining high quality data solutions, with a strong emphasis on Java engineering within the Data Platforms and AI team. This role leads the development of scalable, secure and high performing data platforms, leveraging Java and related technologies to support Westpac New Zealand’s innovative banking products and services. The Senior Data Engineer collaborates with cross functional teams to deliver robust data pipelines, streaming solutions and APIs, ensuring data is managed effectively and supports business decision making. By adopting agile, DevOps and cloud practices, this role drives continuous improvement and contributes to Westpac’s commitment to a customer centric, future focused organization.

Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?

• Strong hands-on experience with Snowflake, including developing, optimising, and operating modern cloud-based data warehouses.
• Practical experience with dbt (Data Build Tool) for data transformation, ELT development, and analytics engineering.
• Advanced Python development skills with proven experience building data solutions on modern cloud data platforms.
• Strong SQL development expertise, including query optimisation, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and complex data transformations.
• Experience using Apache Spark (PySpark/Spark SQL) for large-scale data processing and distributed computing.
• Proven experience designing, building, and maintaining scalable and reliable data pipelines.
• Experience building, scheduling, and orchestrating workflows using Apache Airflow.
• Strong understanding of data warehousing, data modelling, and modern data architecture principles.
• Experience developing and delivering cloud-based data solutions using Snowflake, dbt, Python, SQL, and Azure.
