Job summary

Hutt City Council's Building Control team in Lower Hutt is seeking a Senior Building Officer to deliver building code processing and provide technical leadership.

You will oversee residential and commercial consent applications, maintain records, mentor colleagues, and support continuous improvement, with a focus on safety, quality and compliance.

The role offers ongoing training, wellbeing initiatives and flexible work options within a collaborative, forward-thinking Council.

Qualifications

• Regulation 18 qualification or equivalent in building-related field.
• Proven experience as a Building Officer with competency at Residential 1-3 and Commercial 1-3 levels.
• Advanced knowledge of the Building Act, NZ Building Code, regulations and local government frameworks.
• Strong communication and relationship management skills, with mentoring capability.
• Customer-focused mindset, adaptability to change and strong computer literacy.

Responsibilities

• Process residential and commercial building consent applications, including amendments and Certificates for Public Use.
• Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with the Building Act, NZ Building Code and BCA QMS.
• Provide specialist advice, technical leadership and conduct audits when required.
• Mentor and support Building Officers working towards their competencies.
• Deliver a positive and efficient customer experience.
• Contribute to continuous improvement and support Council's response to emergencies.
