Job summary

Airways New Zealand is seeking a Senior Backup Engineer for our Christchurch campus. You will ensure ongoing backup availability, recoverability and data protection across the organisation, sharing responsibility with the Principal Backup Engineer for platform capability.

You will monitor, test, and optimize backup and restore processes, work with VMware vSphere/Nutanix AHV environments, and contribute to infrastructure projects with input on backup design and resilience.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years' enterprise infrastructure engineering experience.
  • 3+ years with direct responsibility for enterprise backup, replication and disaster recovery.
  • Experience with backup of virtualised workloads (VMware vSphere/Nutanix AHV).
  • Experience with backup environments and recovery automation (PowerShell).
  • Exposure to enterprise storage hardware (HPE StoreOnce/Alletra/Apollo) and air-gapped designs.

Responsibilities

  • Daily monitoring and verification of backup and replication services.
  • Schedule recovery testing and validation against defined RPO/RTO objectives.
  • Resolve issues proactively and escalate where needed.
  • Maintain health of backup environment and documentation.
  • Plan and validate recovery testing against RPO/RTO targets.
  • Provide design input for backup, recovery and retention in projects.

Aboutthe Team:
TheTechnology Team is responsible for all technology disciplines within the airnavigation services environment - engineering design, software design anddevelopment, systems architecture and infrastructure, asset management,installation and maintenance, technical training, workload planning,maintenance program development, project management, and logistics support.

Thepurpose of the IT&SM team is to improve the performance of the organisationand to support and enable the Airways strategy through IT and Digital servicesand leadership.

IT&SMlead the provision of good practice IT and digital services and systems in theareas of workplace technology, corporate business applications, digitalengagement, digital document management, Information management, IT operationsand desktop support.

Aboutthe Role:
We’re expanding our IT&SM team with an opportunity available for a Senior Backup Engineer to join uson a permanent full-time basis at our Christchurch campus.

Reporting to the National IT Operations Manager, you’ll ensure theongoing availability, recoverability and stability of Airways' backup and dataprotection services across the organisation.

You’ll hold shared accountability with the Principal Backup Engineer forthe backup environment, providing a second point of deep platform capabilityacross Airways' infrastructure estates.

Key responsibilities include but aren’t limited to:

  • Daily monitoring and verification of backup andreplication services
  • Scheduling recovery testing and validation againstagreed recovery objectives
  • Proactively resolving issues and escalating asneeded
  • Maintaining the overall health of the backupenvironment
  • Planning, executing and validating recovery testingagainst defined recovery point and recovery time objectives
  • Assessing backup, recovery and retentionrequirements for new services and for infrastructure change
  • Producing and maintaining system leveldocumentation, runbooks and recovery procedures
  • Providing backup, recovery and retention designinput to infrastructure projects and to new services entering the Airwaysenvironment.

AboutYou:
Due to the nature of our operations and the role, you’ll hold thenecessary networking fundamentals to diagnose backup and replication trafficissues (routing, switching, VLANs, firewalls) with the ability to independentlytroubleshoot complex issues.

You’ll be comfortable providing support and coverage where required and andparticipating in the on-call roster to ensure service continuity.

Additionally, you will hold:

  • 5+ years' enterprise infrastructure engineeringexperience, including:
  • 3+ years with direct responsibility for enterprisebackup, replication and disaster recovery at enterprise level and acrossmultiple infrastructure estates
  • Administration, troubleshooting and recoveryoperations i.e. using Veeam or other market leading backup solution
  • Working with backup and recovery of virtualisedworkloads on VMware vSphere and Nutanix AHV
  • Backup and recovery of physical standaloneworkloads i.e. using Bare Metal Restore procedures.
  • Exposure to:
  • Enterprise backup infrastructure, tape librarytechnologies, and storage platforms, including HPE StoreOnce, HPE Alletra, andHPE Apollo solutions
  • Immutable, air gapped and offline backup design,including recovery from ransomware and data corruption events
  • Microsoft Windows Server operating systems
  • Microsoft Active Directory services, includingapplication-consistent backup, authoritative and non-authoritative recovery,and service restoration
  • Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 data protection,and backup and recovery services
  • PowerShell scripting for backup automation,validation and reporting.
  • Sound understanding of ITIL standards andprocesses, particularly incident, problem and change management.
  • Proficiency needed to apply cyber resilienceprinciples to data protection, including immutability, retention and recoveryassurance.
  • Knowledge of IT infrastructure standards,datacentre operations and enterprise architecture principles.
  • Skillneeded to relay technical risks and recovery status to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic business, collaboratewith people, show resilience and agility, take ownership and focus ondelivering successful outcomes.

Beneficial:

  • Experience working in a regulated, safety criticalor 24x7 operational environment.
  • Veeam certification (VMCE) or equivalent vendorbackup certification.
  • Exposure to backup and recovery of UNIX and Linuxworkloads.
  • Experience working with HPE Compute (DL ProLiant)hardware.
  • Knowledge of current and legacy applications andtools within a long-lived estate.
  • Experience contributing data protection andrecovery requirements at project design stage.
