Job summary

Optimal is seeking an Engineering Team Lead to join our team. The role blends hands-on engineering, technical leadership, and people leadership, guiding a small team while shaping architecture and delivery.

You will stay close to the codebase, contribute to scalable systems, and partner with product and design to ship with confidence. Remote-first with NZ/AU flexibility and a dynamic, high-performance culture.

Qualifications

• Entrepreneurial mindset with product and business focus.
• People management experience: mentor engineers while contributing individually.
• Product-minded: focus on outcomes with close product/design collaboration.
• Bias for action; able to decide and move forward.
• Excitement about applying AI to improve development workflows.

• Experience with React, Ruby on Rails, AWS, IaC and CI/CD.

Responsibilities

• Hands-on with code and architecture to deliver scalable systems.
• Shape engineering strategy, architecture, and platform foundations with CTPO.
• Manage a small team, develop engineers, and foster high-performance culture.
• Explore and apply AI tools to boost developer productivity and speed up delivery.
• Own delivery by collaborating with Product and Design to plan and ship.
• Unblock the team, remove friction, and help achieve goals.
• Lead site reliability practices including observability, incident response, on-call, and resilience.
