Job description

Mercury is a bold future-focused organisation, providing energy and telecommunications to more Kiwis than anyone else, leading the way with renewable energy and working toward a sustainable future. At the heart is our purpose. Taking care of tomorrow: connecting people and place today. This pushes us to do all we can to create a better future for our people, our communities, and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Join Mercury's $1B investment in powering New Zealand's energy future!

Are you ready to help shape the future of electricity in Aotearoa? Mercury is seeking an Electrical Engineer to support the delivery of electrical workstreams across our hydro and geothermal generation projects. This is a unique opportunity to work on some of New Zealand's oldest and most iconic energy assets, helping to maintain, upgrade, and modernise critical infrastructure that supports a sustainable energy future.

Working alongside experienced engineers, project managers, operational teams, and specialist contractors, you'll contribute across all stages of the project lifecycle, from concept and design through to installation, commissioning, and close-out. You'll help solve complex technical challenges, support engineering decision-making, and ensure safe, reliable, and high-quality outcomes for our generation assets.

We offer flexibility in our hours to accommodate your lifestyle. You can work from our office, one of our sites, or from home, while still valuing the opportunities to collaborate with your wider team. This role can be based in Hamilton or Rotorua, close to our hydro and geothermal sites.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Technical Delivery: Support the delivery of electrical engineering work across capital and asset improvement projects, ensuring solutions are safe, practical, and fit for purpose.
  • Collaboration & Relationships: Build strong working relationships with internal stakeholders, site teams, contractors, and engineering partners to support successful project outcomes.
  • Project Support: Contribute to project planning, design reviews, commissioning activities, and technical assurance throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Engineering & Quality: Prepare and review engineering documentation, specifications, and technical assessments while supporting compliance with standards and quality requirements.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve processes, share lessons learned, and contribute to the ongoing development of Mercury's engineering capability.
  • Degree or higher diploma in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional membership (e.g. Engineering New Zealand) desirable, but not essential.
  • 4-7+ years' experience in electrical engineering, project engineering, asset management, or capital projects within utilities, energy, industrial, or related sectors.
  • A solid understanding of electrical power systems, equipment, and engineering design principles.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary project teams and contributing to successful engineering outcomes.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work across multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Well-developed problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyse issues and develop practical solutions.
  • Experience working within structured project delivery or stage-gate frameworks is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of power generation, high-voltage systems, hydro, or geothermal assets would be beneficial but is not essential.
  • Additional 5 days leave per annum (MyDays)
  • $400 one-off tax-free payment towards setting up your home office
  • A diverse workplace where your unique abilities and talents will be recognised and encouraged
  • Annual salary reviews with an excellent parental leave policy, plus the option to purchase additional leave
  • The opportunities, career pathways, and facilities associated with working for one of New Zealand's largest multi-utility providers
  • Flexible working policy, with the autonomy and trust to work from our purpose-built premises and from home
  • Discounted health insurance and free life and income insurance
  • Excellent wellbeing programme, including up to $100 annual health checks and a confidential assistance programme
  • Gender affirmation leave and supportive bereavement leave to be taken when you lose anyone close to you, including your pet
