Job summary

Ara Poutama Aotearoa - Department of Corrections in New Zealand seeks an Education Tutor at Rimutaka Men's Prison to deliver end-to-end rehabilitation and reintegration support.

You will help learners through pathway assessments, online education sites, and programs that raise literacy, numeracy, and job search skills, with a focus on reducing re-offending. This fixed-term role covers maternity leave until 19 February 2027.

Qualifications

• Experience assessing and working with young people and adults who have not previously experienced education success.
• Familiarity with e-learning environments and supporting learners to use them.
• Good understanding of assessing learning needs and developing individual learning pathway plans.
• Previously worked in a Kaupapa Māori or Pasifika environment.
• A tertiary qualification and/or a qualification in Adult Education.
• Experience working with offenders in a prison environment (not essential).
• Demonstrated competency in using computer applications including Microsoft Office suite, TEC Literacy and Numeracy Adult Assessment Tools.
• Sound knowledge of the New Zealand Qualifications Framework.
• Experience with embedding literacy and numeracy.
• Experience successfully engaging Maori, Pasifika, and at-risk youth in education.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of end-to-end rehabilitation and reintegration functions, our Learning and Interventions teams are dedicated to reducing re-offending.
• Support prison-based learners to become better prepared for employment and further education.
• Assist learners with pathway assessments and use secure online education websites to improve skills and transition into further study or employment post release.
• Support a variety of education programmes and activities offered to the men we manage.
• Encourage learners to improve literacy and numeracy skills and acquire job search skills.
