Job summary

Department of Corrections NZ – Upper Hutt, North Island is seeking an Education Tutor to support prison-based learners in achieving employment readiness and further study. The role focuses on pathway assessments, literacy and numeracy, and engaging learners in online education platforms to progress toward NZ qualifications post-release.

Based in the custodial environment, you will lead by example, maintain professional boundaries, and collaborate with stakeholders to improve rehabilitation

Qualifications

• Experience assessing and working with young people and adults who have not previously experienced education success.
• Familiarity with e-learning environments and supporting learners to use them.
• Understanding of assessing learning needs and developing individual learning pathway plans.
• Experience embedding literacy and numeracy and knowledge of NZ Qualifications Framework.

Responsibilities

Mō te tūnga | About the role

Responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of end-to-end rehabilitation and reintegration functions, our Learning and Interventions teams are dedicated to reducing re-offending.

This is a great opportunity to gain some hands‑on experience to kick start your career. As an Education Tutor you will support prison‑based learners to become better prepared for employment and further education. You will focus on supporting learners to engage in pathway assessments, using our secure online education websites to help improve their skills, knowledge, and transition into further study and/or employment post‑release.

You will also be supporting a variety of education programmes and activities offered to the men we manage. You will play a significant role in encouraging learners to improve their literacy and numeracy skills, work towards achieving New Zealand qualifications and to acquire job‑search skills.

This position is based within our custodial environment thus it is imperative that you can effectively lead by example and maintain professional boundaries. By interacting closely with key stakeholders, both internal and external, you will be collaborative in sharing information and ensuring outcomes beneficial to the successful rehabilitation of the men in our care.

This is a fixed‑term position, covering maternity leave, until 19 February 2027.

• Experience assessing and working with young people and adults who have not previously experienced education success
• Familiarity with e-learning environments and supporting learners to use them
• A good understanding of assessing learning needs and developing individual learning pathway plans.
• Previously worked in a Kaupapa Māori or Pasifika environment
• A tertiary qualification and/or a qualification in Adult Education
• Experience working with offenders in a prison environment (not essential)
• Demonstrated competency in using computer applications including Microsoft Office suite, TEC Literacy and Numeracy Adult Assessment Tools
• Sound knowledge of the New Zealand Qualifications Framework
• Experience with embedding literacy and numeracy
• Experience successfully engaging Maori, Pasifika, and at‑risk youth in education
• A full NZ Drive Licence
• Exceptional communication and organisational skills with the ability to influence, inspire and motivate
• A strong focus on work planning and processes of administration tasks is required in the role

The midpoint of the salary range is $80,623 per annum and the full range (85%-120%) is $77,841 - $86,152 per annum. Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role. For more information on the role of an Education Tutor please review the Job Description.
