Job summary

Transpower New Zealand Limited in Wellington invites a seasoned Principal Software Engineer to lead a high-performing engineering team. This hands-on leadership role spans the full software lifecycle, from requirements through deployment and support, with hybrid work arrangements.

You\'ll mentor engineers, shape technical direction and promote DevOps, secure development and modern practices across enterprise integrations. A NZ-based, national-scale impact role.

Qualifications

• 10+ years' experience in software analysis, design and development.
• Experience leading application development initiatives and building engineering capability.
• Strong expertise in Java and modern Spring frameworks.
• Experience working with DevOps toolchains, CI/CD pipelines and automated delivery practices.
• Knowledge of enterprise integration patterns and large-scale system integration.
• Knowledge and practical experience in using AI-assisted tools across the software development lifecycle.
• Experience providing technical leadership across projects and operational environments.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, design and development best practice.

Responsibilities

• Leading the design, development and lifecycle management of business-critical applications and integrations.
• Providing technical leadership and mentoring to engineers across the team.
• Driving continuous improvement of development tools, standards, processes and practices.
• Championing DevOps, automation, secure development and agile delivery approaches.
• Working closely with architects and solution designers to deliver robust, scalable and supportable solutions.
• Supporting the ongoing reliability and performance of systems that underpin New Zealand's electricity sector.
• Partnering with vendors and delivery partners to enhance engineering capability and outcomes.
