Job summary

Transpower New Zealand Limited (TPNZ) is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead a high‑performing engineering team in Wellington. This hands‑on role covers the full software lifecycle, from requirements gathering to deployment and continuous improvement.

You’ll provide technical leadership across application development, integrations and software engineering practices, mentoring engineers and shaping the technical direction. Hybrid work and flexible benefits are offered.

Qualifications

• 10+ years' experience in software analysis, design and development.
• Experience leading application development initiatives and building engineering capability.
• Strong expertise in Java and modern Spring frameworks.
• Experience working with DevOps toolchains, CI/CD pipelines and automated delivery practices.
• Knowledge of enterprise integration patterns and large‑scale system integration.
• Knowledge and practical experience in using AI‑assisted tools across the software development lifecycle.
• Experience providing technical leadership across projects and operational environments.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, design and development best practice.

Responsibilities

• Leading the design, development and lifecycle management of business‑critical applications and integrations
• Providing technical leadership and mentoring to engineers across the team
• Driving continuous improvement of development tools, standards, processes and practices
• Championing DevOps, automation, secure development and agile delivery approaches
• Working closely with architects and solution designers to deliver robust, scalable and supportable solutions
• Supporting the ongoing reliability and performance of systems underpinning New Zealand's electricity sector
• Partnering with vendors and delivery partners to enhance engineering capability and outcomes
