Job description

We are seeking a Principal Advisor - Strategic Asset Management to join the Strategy, Planning and Performance team within the Ministry of Justice Property group. In this strategic role, you'll lead and shape the long-term direction, performance, and sustainability of the Ministry's nationally significant property portfolio.

You'll play a key role in our forward planning—helping ensure our buildings and infrastructure are fit for the future and supports the needs of the justice system and the communities we serve.

  • Strategic advisory role
  • Influence nationwide infrastructure
  • Work collaboratively across the Ministry and wider government
  • Make a tangible impact on Ministry of Justice property

As a senior specialist, you will act as a trusted advisor to Property leadership, governance groups and senior leaders, providing clear, evidence-based advice on long-term portfolio priorities, investment decisions and asset lifecycle planning.

You will lead the development and maintenance of the Property Asset Management Framework, Strategic Asset Management Plan, standards and guidance. Working across Property, Finance, investment planning and operational teams, you will help embed consistent asset management practices and ensure these are integrated into wider business and investment planning.

The role will support Ministry of Justice, Property to improve asset management maturity, strengthen asset data and support teams and service providers to apply strategic asset management frameworks and lifecycle processes in practice. You will represent the Ministry in relevant cross-agency and central government forums and ensure its approach aligns with government asset management and investment requirements.

To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • Significant senior experience in strategic asset management, property, infrastructure or a related advisory field.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing a strategic asset management plan, framework or equivalent portfolio-wide strategy.
  • Advanced knowledge of asset lifecycle planning, portfolio planning and infrastructure investment in a large or complex organisation.
  • Experience advising senior leaders and governance groups on significant asset investment, renewal, maintenance, disposal or portfolio decisions.
  • Experience translating government, regulatory or organisational requirements into practical asset management frameworks, standards and guidance.
  • Demonstrated experience improving asset management practices across multiple teams, disciplines or service providers.
  • Experience improving asset data and establishing processes that support evidence-based decisions.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the judgement and political awareness needed to operate effectively in a complex environment.
  • A relevant tertiary or professional qualification in asset management, property, infrastructure, planning or a related discipline, or equivalent specialist experience.

No candidate will meet every single desired qualification. If your experience looks a little different from what we have outlined and believe you can bring value to the role, we'd love to hear from you!

As part of the Corporate Services Group, the Property team supports the Ministry of Justice | Te Tāhū o te Ture to strengthen people's trust in the law of Aotearoa New Zealand by being responsible for the Ministry's owned and leased sites.

For our owned buildings this covers the full asset lifecycle - from land acquisition and construction through to renewal projects and maintenance to demolition and land disposal.

The relationships we hold across Te Tāhū o te Ture and the justice sector are critical for us to work together and successfully deliver strategic and operational priorities.

This is an exciting time to join the Property Strategy, Planning and Performance team. We are a new and diverse team with an interesting variety of work and a full workplan. The New Zealand Infrastructure Plan released earlier this year sets out actions to improve infrastructure planning and delivery in the public sector. The Ministry is committed to meeting these obligations to provide fit for purpose and future focused buildings and infrastructure.

We offer you a range of benefits to support your wellbeing and help make the Ministry a great place to be. These include:

  • 4.4 weeks holiday leave
  • flexible work hours where possible
  • access to a variety of inclusive and proactive networks

With a wide range of jobs, you also get the chance to gain a variety of skills and experience while developing your career.

The appointing salary for this role will be between $130,129 and $168,062 based on skills and experience.
