Job summary

KiwiRail is seeking a Platform Engineer - Network to design, implement and manage our Operational Technology network infrastructure across critical systems in New Zealand. You will work with switches, routers, firewalls, VPNs, load balancers and security controls to ensure secure, resilient connectivity.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years in enterprise networking, experience with Cisco devices and security tech (Check Point, Fortinet, IDS/IPS, VPNs, proxies, NAC).

Qualifications

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science or Information Technology.
  • Industry certifications such as Cisco, Fortinet, Checkpoint, or Netscaler are highly desirable.
  • Current full New Zealand Driver Licence.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement and operate KiwiRail's OT network infrastructure.
  • Maintain switches, routers, firewalls, VPNs, load balancers and NACs.
  • Monitor performance, perform root-cause analysis and resolve incidents.
  • Apply cybersecurity controls and support threat detection/response.
  • Develop and test disaster recovery plans for resilience.

Position Description

As a Platform Engineer - Network, you will be responsible for the design, implementation, administration, monitoring, and continuous improvement of KiwiRail's Operational Technology network infrastructure.


You'll work across a range of enterprise-grade technologies, ensuring secure and resilient connectivity for critical operational systems.


Key responsibilities include:


  • Managing and maintaining network and security infrastructure including switches, routers, firewalls, VPNs, load balancers, and network access controls.

  • Supporting LAN/WAN and telecommunications technologies to ensure reliable and secure connectivity.

  • Monitoring network performance, identifying issues, conducting root cause analysis, and driving timely resolution of incidents.

  • Implementing cybersecurity controls and supporting threat detection and response activities.

  • Developing and testing disaster recovery plans to ensure business continuity and system resilience.

  • Collaborating with cybersecurity, architecture, engineering, and operational teams to deliver secure and scalable network solutions.

  • Contributing to infrastructure improvements, automation initiatives, and engineering best practices.

  • Participating in an after-hours on-call support roster


To be successful in this role, you will bring strong technical expertise across enterprise networking and security technologies, alongside a collaborative and customer-focused approach.


You’ll have:


  • 5+ years' experience managing enterprise network infrastructure

  • Strong experience with Cisco switches and routers

  • Hands-on experience with network security technologies including Checkpoint, Fortinet, IDS/IPS, VPNs, proxies, and network access control solutions

  • Experience supporting LAN/WAN, voice/data services, routing, switching, and telecommunications technologies

  • Experience with load balancing technologies such as Citrix Netscaler or F5

  • Knowledge of Operational Technology (OT) environments and associated security requirements

  • Experience with network automation, scripting, and infrastructure optimisation

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage complex technical issues

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships across technical and business teams
